Paying the english to watch Ireland play!

I'd assume for the 160 quid TV licence we wouldn't have to pay the english (Sky) to watch our country play? Surely this is one thing they can't sell off ?

    Just seems wrong.

Competitive games are shown on RTE.

    Friendlys are shown on Sky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,816 ✭✭✭Vorsprung

It was on ITV, the FA sold the rights to them and RTE decided not to buy them.

Wasn't "sold off", it was a home match for England and the TV rights were theirs to sell.

Eh? You have a choice to pay a subsidiary (Sky Ireland) of a British company (BSkyB, British Sky Broadcasting) for a service that they provide.

Honestly, some people will use any excuse to get a dig, but this is just ridiculous.

Home nation sells the rights. FA sold that game to ITV/Setanta for here; FAI sold this and all home friendlies to Sky.

Forgot this was even on - and I have tickets for it. Seriously cannot be bothered going to see the negative football we're playing now.

Sky bid substantially more for rights to our home friendlies, what ya expect RTE to do?
Theres far better things for RTE to be spending their limited sports budget on.

I shouldn't have to pay anyone more money to watch my country play. I'm not getting a dig at the english. Its the point of paying a private company to watch my country.

Can't afford it. Can't afford the 62 quid a month to sky either.

It's not your country, it's a team of people representing a country at a sport. Sport is a business, so is television.

Do you think tickets to international sporting events should be free too?

And the "a country" in question is Ireland, which is presumably where the OP is from. Hence it is his country playing football right now. Talk about pedantics

I have sky so I don't really care but if I didn't I'd be píssed off if my national broadcasting channel didn't show the nations football matches. So too would the Irish rugby fans.

But they sold the rights. At least it's only the friendlies.

Sure, seeing as your offering. We paid for most of the stadium. We pay for a lot of the team costs. Why not?

Sky aren't "the English". They're a broadcasting company from the UK.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 419 ✭✭EireIceMan

Id have to agree with the OP.
We cant afford sky so watching the highlights now. Sky is great but i cant stand them buying every sport etc. Eventually to watch any sport you'll need sky sports. Look at F1. They bought the rights from BBC for 2012/13 yet BBC only have ten races live and sky have a dedicated F1 channel. My bollix after this year F1 will be Free to Air in ireland or england. So a dedicated F1 fan who hasnt missed race in years now has to pay, what, 60+ quid a month to follow the sport they love. Bollixs

It's a friendly. A game of very little consequence.

You get to watch the games that matter on RTE. If you wanna watch the friendlies, get Sky. Simple.

You're obviously not much of a football fan in the first place as you don't already have Sky.

I think this thread is just an excuse for you to be Anti "English" if you ask me.

OP, you always had the option of going to the match and pay the FAI directly.

    Is this about The Lions?

    Nah it's about football.

The Lions matches are only available on Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland. It's unfortunate but hey, it's business. RTE losing broadcasting rights for Ireland matches to Sky in NI, now that's unforgivable.

What I find more disgusting is the Irish (RTE) paying the English to show highlights of their Premiership matches but I guarantee few will complain about that because this country is full of barstool football fans.

Watch live football and support your own local Irish clubs!

I am sure Delaney would be happy to take the money directly. He could rest the money in his account until he bumps into the Sky lads.

So the point of this thread is that you're broke?

A Porche is s luxury I can't afford. But I don't b*tch and moan about the Germans because of it.

Also I wouldn't drive one as I still have a full head of hair!

The point of the thread is we shouldn't have to pay a private company to watch our country play. Thats exactly the point of the tv licence. Its national interest broadcasting and not the right of the FAI to flog off to pay that nob Delaney 350k/yr!

Would love to see the Germans, english or french being told they can't watch their country play without paying over 62 quid per month to RTE. No way would anyone else stand for it, but the Irish....

We get what we deserve I suppose.

Remember when this happened first (sky bought the rights to Irish games) I believe there was so much uproar sky agreed to show the Irish games on sky 1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,995 ✭✭✭Sofiztikated

I'm unsure as to what is happening?

The OP is crying about paying his TV licence, and the fact that RTE were outbid for the friendly matches by Sky? So has a go at the "English?"

So is it licence fee outrage?
Sky having more financial oomph than RTE?
    RTE wasting their money?
    RTE not wasting their money?
    "De brits?"
    1916?
    "furriners?"
Sheer inability to grasp business concepts?
God given right to watch anything involving Ireland, on terrestrial channels?
    Linda Martin?

Since when are international friendlies necessarily "national interest broadcasting". Does the Irish women's football team have the same status? What about other sports?

I'm pretty sure in the previous Government Eamonn Ryan outlined a number of events that were "in the national interest". International friendlies weren't one.

    No, it's not shíte.

    There, I did my best!

A limited number of events can be chosen as nationally important and designated as free to air; football friendlies don't come in under that. It's hardly a national scandal. You can't watch your province play Heineken Cup rugby on RTE either.

A pretty big chunk of the money Sky collect goes back into those sports it shows; there are FAI initiatives that wouldn't exist if it wasn't for that money. In addition, there are priorities to be decided in RTE; should they pay for international friendlies or spend the money on something else? They evidently decided to do the latter, and it's hard to argue with the decision.

So will you be complaining about every activity, sporting or otherwise, that is not shown on RTE when Ireland are being represented or is this just your rant about not being able to watch the sport you want to while wrapping it up as being for the greater good?

FWIW I don't agree that anything should be on a protected list. It should be up to the relevant authority (the FAI in this case) to do what it wants with its product)

I don't get your reasoning behind this statement. Football isn't just EPL, La Liga etc. I don't have Sky Sports, I am however an avid football fan. LOI and local junior football is my fix and these are where I choose to put my money.

As for the OP's point, I agree to a certain point, but the economics needed, excluding the ridiculous salary paid to Delaney, have to be found somewhere and Sky have the endless pot that feeds the outrageous greed that permeates in the EPL and helps to keep football going here.
