Lazy Question

My normally bulletproof 2003 Bandit 600 spluttered to a halt on the roadside yesterday. Being in a rush somewhere, I had run it very low on fuel and filled it to the brim afterwards in the filling station I usually use. Within 500m it started to misfire and I coaxed it along on three/two/one cylinders until it stopped after 6km.
The question is: Obviously the problem is with fuel supply, almost certainly caused by letting it run so low and then filling up. It's nothing to do with the air breather into the tank as I opened the tank cap along the way and it made no diifference. I always use the same place for fuel so it is unlikely that I paid €1.60/l for water. I think that dirt of some sort has been carried out of the tank and has blocked something along the way. I can start at the carbs and work back towards the tank but was wondering if there is something obvious that I should look at first.
Thanks for any advice you might have.

Did you put diesel in it by mistake?

I did once on a scooter rideout, had to get the van home...
