Lost my job and happy!

So lost my job where I was getting 23k a year. I was spending a lot of money on petrol and things and had feck all money left after rent and stuff. I hated getting up at 7AM for work. It was an absolute pain.

Now I'm getting rent allowance and 188 euros a week off the government and now I live a king. Get up whenever I want. No more taking orders. Its my first time on the dole since I graduated college and I love welfare! Managing to save 60 euro a week and have plenty of money for booze for the weekends. Isn't life great :pac: When I need extra money I might consider getting a job.

I have to agree with the OP. I spent the last three years in college struggling to get by while studying for a Law degree. I was working three days a week on top of full time study. I finished last week, walked into the Community Welfare Office and they signed me a check for 188euro. No wonder the country is in the state its in, an absolute joke. If they spent half the welfare budget on investing in jobs the place would be nowhere as bad as it is.

Wait till the economy recovers in a few years and welfare is slashed. We will be like the Brits on welfare which is beans on toast 7 days a week cause you cant afford jack **** because its so low

    Troll or not...

After grinding by on 23k a year, some people at least deserve a few weeks to destress and vent. Arguably, it's one of the best things to do on becoming unemployed. Relax for a few weeks, put your old work behind you... then when you've steadied yourself and gotten over it, go for it with a clear mind.

Although, the fact that welfare is a better option that working says a lot about the minimum wage and the cost of living in this country. In that case, '**** the system' is quite a natural and fair response.

If people can live off that in college then there's no reason why they can't do it on the dole

Why the stigma in admitting you are happy not being a job? Isnt it much better to be happy and healthy and planning to do something different in your life, upskilling and trying to better yourself. The OP wasnt happy or earning much money in the job so they decided to change the situation for the better, fair play to him or her.

Ireland still suffers from Keeping up with the Jones's where its better to stay miserable. stressed and exhausted in a job so you can tell people who dont even care about you "Oh yes im so lucky to have a job, im grateful", what a stupid and destructive attitude.

In a way i dont blame you. The thing i hate about authority is that its always abused by those who hold it. In work enviroments its just people climbing over each others backs to get to the top...I get sick of dealing with the same assholes every day and wonder if there is any point and just retire on 180 or whatever it is a week.

So you can afford to save €60 a week and still go drinking when you're only getting €188, but when you were getting €442 a week (23k divided by 52), you had "feck all money"? What were you renting back then, a palace?

If I got €442 a week, I'd still have way more than €60 left after rent, basic food shopping and transport. (Not including bills or anything, but you didn't mention those so...)

Something doesn't quite add up here...

EDIT: As pointed out below, I stupidly forgot about tax. However, the OP still has the same utility bills (maybe more cause he's now home during the day) and the same costs for food shopping, so I don't understand how he could possibly be so much better off earning half as much as before (even with rent removed).

Never heard of tax? It works out at a net of €382 a week.

    Then minus rent of €100 = €282

Minus travelling to work expenses of at least €50 leaves €232.

That works out at €44, at the very best, better off each week for working 40 hours.

Just like it was slashed during the last boom????

OP, it is a shame those days are gone. You would be getting a Christmas bonus on top of your €188.

  • Site Banned Posts: 7 mickmouse

I get 382 euro a week. Rent is 125 euro per week which leaves 272 euro. Travel costs me 60 euro per week which leaves me with 212 euro. And then I'd spend more on lunches and stuff. It was like I was working for a euro an hour. I'm going to better myself and hopefully get a higher paid job.

The christmas bonus I got in my previous job was a 50 euro voucher. I didn't quit the job by the way. I got let go after two years at the end of my contract because the work was drying up and a lot of people in the company were been left go. I'm going to apply for higher paid jobs but not working for that money again! If I can't get one its back to do a masters.

Good for you OP. I'd much rather hear your story than a story where a young person wasted their best years dredging through shoite work for sad money, and realised too late that their life was a shell of what they had hoped.

Relax, enjoy, learn some new things, remember why life is worth living. Eventually you'll come around and find something worth doing. I'm only getting paid slightly more than you were, but my rent is cheap and I cycle instead of drive, and my job is at least related to what I'm interested in. I'm happy for you to have my taxes for a while (and indeed, your own taxes back!).

Life isn't work. You are not your job. Far too many people have swallowed, hook line and sinker, this modern idea that refusing to be miserable is a sign of poor character.

232 (left after expenses) - 188 (dole) = €44 better off from working (at best)

I don't think they said the job was all that bad, just that they are happy not having to get up early and commute and answer to a boss - isn't that the case for lots of people though, it's not exactly a nightmare existence. I don't see any issue at all with people being on the dole when they are looking for work - and for however long it takes, including doing e.g. a Fás course to upskill, but just being on the dole and not bothering to look for work is something I don't agree with. What's "keeping up with the Jones" about that? Isn't "keeping up the Jones" trying to "match" or "better" people in terms of material possessions, lifestyle etc?

I agree nobody should feel "grateful" to have a job if they're treated badly though - in which case, keep looking for other work, or if exceptionally miserable, to the point of depression/stress, and with no dependents/large outgoings, leave.

This person didn't even leave - they were let go, so it's not like they packed it in as a two-fingers to "the man".

I agree. It's not something you can do long term, but it's great for a few months. Last time I was unemployed, after 3 months I was going insane. You do need a job eventually. Maybe the OP can find something closer with less of a commute and maybe even more rewarding.

I know most people if they have families etc can't afford to drop out of the rat race, but for people in the OP's position, it's an added benefit and he should take advantage of it.

especially if this turns out to be a nice summer.

I lost my job in 08, and at the time had the same attitude as the op, I had no major outgoings bar rent, and no dependants. So I thought I'd enjoy the summer and weigh up my options. It got old pretty fast, I could basically survive , but as they say no mon, no fun. Its not great for the self confidence having to sign on once a month watching your savings dwindle,
Eventually went back to college for two years, and got a job in a factory in 2011, where I have been since, I had been out of work so long it felt like winning the lotto at the time, and i'm so grateful for the 460 euro I take home a week now, after trying to live on 188 euro for 3 years wondering if I would ever work again, while my self confidence plumetted. I know some people say money or your job isn't everything, and they're right to a certain extent, but it sure as hell goes a long way
