Best Driving Routes

I recently read an article about Los Angeles which concluded with a piece about the Pacific Coast Highway and the great views, sights, sounds and experiences you can enjoy along this road. Does anybody have such suggestions for other road trips in Ireland, Europe or indeed worldwide?

Has anybody done such a trip themselves? Have they enjoyed themselves even though they were driving a lot of the time?

Thread about this on one of the Regional Forums, read somewhere that its one of the top 5 in the world. Would love to do the Belfast/Derry route sometime as a driver, maybe a plan for a future road trip.

(would obviously have to take into account driving to Belfast and back from Derry.

I drove down to Waterford a few months back with the missus, on the way home we drove through blessington, gorgeous roads with gorgeous views, definitely worth a look. The N2 Northbound just before Slane is nice too, over the boyne river, through the Valley, then after slane village staying north on the N2 is nice. Not exactly "routes" that can go on for hours, but nice drives nonetheless.

I did it with my dad a few years ago. The sun was splitting the stones and it looked absolutely fantastic. The best driving experience I've ever had.

Also worth a mention is the drive around that peninsula in Donegal (can't remember the name). It's amazing.

Inishowen, or as it's more commonly known, God's Country.

The Irish Times had a series of "great drives", by Bob Montgomery. Some of these were well known scenic routes , others were in less well know places. It's in a book too. One of these days I'm going to do the lot!

    You won't see much bh.

Belfast, motorway until you hit Toome (which is bypassed) then another straight road until you get to Dungiven.

Then it's over the Glenshane pass, which admittedly is beautiful (even stop at the ponderosa, Ireland's highest pub for a pint)

    Then Derry.

For me, it's the Thomastown/Graiguenmanagh - New Ross road.

    Ireland's at its most beautiful.

Take the N59 from Galway to Clifden, then the Sky Road, back onto the N59 as far as Leenane and Killary Harbour but go up past Doo Lough to Louisburgh. beautiful road, fabulous scenery.

The drive over Achill down to Keel Strand is one of the best on the planet, may be some roads as good as it but none better.

I was refering to the coastal route or the A2 Road between Belfast and Derry, not the Motorway/DC/Glenshane.

    ;)

And surly your not encouraging drinking driving stopping for a pint.

    :p

Although it will mean not being able to sample anything at the Bushmills Distillery if taking the A2 route.

    :(

    The north coast route ;)

Glenn's of Antrim are one of nature's most spectacular beauties.

Downhill beach, benone beach, Portdtewart stand.....

Actually thinking about it, it'd make a dam good caller van trip...

The Hai Van pass in Vietnam. The Top Gear lads did it on their special. While I didn't drive it myself I was on the back of a Motorbike and it was truly stunning. Anyone who would be traveling between Hue and Hoi An in Vietnam should do it :D

The road leading through Lismore, Co. Waterford (past Lismore Castle) and then on to Cappoquin.
It's really lovely on a summer evening.

There's the castle on your left as you're leaving Lismore, the old walls of the castle's estate enclosing a bit of woodland on your left and then a stream on your right, usually with a few duckies in it.
