Anyone from the forums playing at this week ?

Well I know of one and best of luck to him :D

Anyone else apart from the obvious fella ? :)

Personally I have 3 other interests, 3 lads from Athlone playing in it. Going to try to get up to Baltray on Sunday if I can to watch for a bit if anyone else is around :)

Beautiful day up in Baltray yesterday, the course is presented really well......Really wanted to grab the sticks from the boot and join in.......but the thoughts ofshooting 00's soon squashed that ambition.

My two friends narrowly missed the cut. One of them took an 8 on the last to miss it by 2. - ouch.

Hard luck to west of ireland runner up and boards.ie legend, gorfield, who just missed out aswell..

Wow just looking at some of the scores and to see if Conor Deegan (doesn't appear to play much if any of the championships for some reason) of an incredible +5 handicap made it through. From http://www.gui.ie/leinster/championships/results/results-2012

    "Early 3rd Round Clubhouse Scores
    216 R Cannon (Balbriggan) 80 68 68
    219 T McLarnon (Massereene) 71 76 72, S Walsh (Portmarnock) 71 75 73
    220 G Bohill (Co. Louth) 75 71 74
    221 P Murray (Limerick) 73 74 74"

Some come back from an 80 in the first round by R Cannon, goes to prove you should never throw in the towel.

I think he was working with Newstalk this weekend.
Don't know much about his golfing career, was he a successful juvenile?
Please don't say he just took up golf after his GAA days were over :(

    C Deegan, a +5 handicap shooting 80 74 in reasonable conditions?

Maybe +5 on his home course only.

We've a 6 h/capper at our club, once he plays at another course he's more of a 10/11 handicap. Plays our course about 4/5 times a week and knows every inch of it. Basically has got his handicap to 6 by being so familiar with the course. Bring him to an away course where he has to play shots he's not used to and he seem to crumble

6 handicapper turns into a 10/11 handicapper is no real shock

    A +5 shooting 80 is a bit different.

Maybe just a really bad day. Look at tiger the other day sure and he is the best in the world coming off 4 wins already this year.

This game just has that nack of biting you in the arse when you least expect it.

Well done to fellow clubman Paul Dunne. Looks like he nearly choked going down the straight, but all reports he deserved his win.

Due to play with his Dad on Saturday morning so hoping for a few invaluable tips :)

I know Stuart Grehan, finished T5th, I've played with him a few times over the last couple weeks, very nice player, at +2 he's the first person to get below scratch in Tullamore so fair play to him, he is the current Irish Youth Champion. The lucky thing got a scholarship for East Michigan so he is only back for the summer. He seems to compete pretty well in a lot of the amateur events so hopefully he will have a good summer.

So I can forget about coming over to win the gross in Tullamore for the summer on the Open days ;)

Stuart is very high quality, and imo might just make his international debut this year..... Also lol at the people on here commenting on players in the Cships not playing to their hcaps....... I would be very surprised if anyone over the course of 2rds on here played anywhere near their handicap using the same course setup. Css was 75 with little wind and sunshine. Lightning greens, knee high rough, bouncy fairways and 18 tough pins. Get out from behind your keyboards and go watch these events.

Well said man.....made it down on the sunday.....as I mention before course was impecable and pins in some nasty wee spots. These events should be a must for all to go and watch, we are very lucky to have a wealth of young and not so young talent in this country......while they all wont make it as touring pros or fullfil their dreams, we still should be more encouraging and less damning.

As someone living in Cork I'm delighted to hear the inter-pros are in Lee Valley this year. Will definitely go for a look at that, should be a great chance to see the top amateurs in action

Agree fully with this, everyone can have off days. There is a problem however with a number of players that can enter Championships who never have a decent score or showing or even come close to making cuts.

It certainly annoys me when I see lads shooting high 80's or into 90's and then NR'ing in second round or WD.

I think ultimately what a lot of people don't realise is that the top amateur events are often set up as or more difficult than the vast majority of PGA Tour and European Tour events. I agree that the courses we watch on TV are significantly longer, but length never bothers the pros, nor does it bother top amateurs. If you consider Baltray last weekend, Royal Dublin for the amateur and most other championships in Ireland, you will generally have guaranteed wind (at one point or another), just about guaranteed rain, knee high rough and potentially freezing conditions, all of which make for golf courses that could be compared to set ups on the Open rota such as Carnoustie and Muirfield.

On top of that you have the very real and often overlooked fact that the ams do not have up to 5,000 spectators following them, who can essentially ensure a golf ball will not be lost during the round, barring an exceptionally wild shot from the player in question. Last of all, amateurs usually play from the very back sticks, whereas the pros will usually be given a few respite holes here and there that are pushed forward, although arguably less so in the majors.

The fact is, any score around and under 80 at Rosses Point, Lahinch, Portrush...etc from the back tees is a hugely respectable effort, and one that is beyond 99.99% of golfers.
