To make you aware of how fast you're actually going.

I've learned that most of them seem to use 8-bit signed integers.

    I quite like them.
I imagine that for most people they serve as a nice interactive reminder... I would like it if the one near my house was further along the road as it's one of the few places that I find myself creeping noticeably above the limit... if it was further down the road away from the round about it would have a better effect.

Actually I was running one day, I'm not the smallest of lads mind you, and I registered at 10 kmph! :D

It'd be interesting if instead of showing your speed it showed the average stopping distance from that speed. Might make people think a bit more.

There's one on a road near where I live that I pass by often enough.

Have to say I think it's done well and a great idea. It always takes my attention, anyway.

That said, not sure if they're all the same or not, but after a certain time of night, until a certain time of morning (times i've yet to determine) it just constantly strobe-flashes 88 (all the lights) and it won't change. I assume this is to prevent the prior-mentioned boy-racer brigade (as you can't actually see your speed).

More of these would be a good thing, and less of those speed limit signs that are only half the size they should be (what's their purpose?!).

I think they just fail a lot, maybe?
The one near me often just shows one digit that changes but not in a logical way... so if you pass it at say 65 it shows a 3 and if you pass at 55 it shows a 7... accelerate and the number changes but randomly. I think the rain gets into them and mucks them up.

    That's very much car dependent.

A Garda I know originally from Belmullet told me the erected flashing speed indicator only lasted less than 5 weeks there. It had to be taken down due to the local boy racer hooligans trying to achieve the highest speed being flashed on the display!

I dunno, I thought that myself, initially, to be honest, but it seems to be flashing everytime I pass it in the morning/late at night and always seems to be working fine during the day.

To be honest, it's not that I don't think they break that much, it's more that I don't think the council would be that efficient at fixing them so often.

Personally I think there should be a camera on it and once it's flashing red it trigers the camera a still is taken and few days you get your fine. It's all good and well having these there to remind you but make them useful. Simple is you have been reminded you know the limit you've been caught. Should be more fixed camera points like they have in the UK.

It's a great incentive for us cyclists to speed up and not embarrass ourselves by passing at less than 50km/h. :)

The one near mount anville is on a hill.
As a result people going down the hill there slam on their brakes because they're 2km/h over the speed limit.
It's rediculous having them. People crawling by in traffic slamming on their brakes.
The only thing that its told me is that at 55km/h on my car is actually 49km/h.

We used to always have races on the long straight by ours to see if we could break it. It shows 88 when you go over 100 cause it only has 2 digits. The acceleration tests are good too, draw a line 100m a way and the highest speed wins. So yeah the signs are stupid.

Any I'm aware of down our way are limited to only show aprox 20km/hr above the speed limit they're located in to stop young lads trying to achieve the fastest speed etc. I thought that it was set up this way on all of these signs?

...those speed limit signs that are only half the size they should be (what's their purpose?!).

Full-sized speed limit signs appear as you enter a speed zone and smaller repeater signs are posted at 500m intervals to remind you of the limit. Its an EU regulation AFAIK

Is this some inside knowledge or are you admitting to doing > 127 km/h in a 50 zone?

If the place warrants having a sign to show your speed, as I've only noticed them around schools, it'd be better to install a Gatso and actually force drivers to slow down. Then put the show you speed signs on the open roads and the speed vans where they have these signs now.
