I have to cycle to work tomorrow night 10pm and back at 3am. Problem is, I have to go through a dodgy area and past a dodgy pub/club, unavoidable.
Usually I have a front and back light on and wearing a high viz jacket.
Would it be best to turn lights off and not wear high viz jacket till past this area, so as not to attract attention to myself and just be on the lookout for cars more than normal?
Or keep lights and jacket on for some of the idiots driving around at that time of a saturday night?

Definitely keep the lights on. What's the area specifically?

I lived in what could be called a rough spot in Dublin (Just off Buckingham street), and although I wasn't cracked on the area I don't think anyone would have a problem cycling through it.

Personally, I'd ditch the hi-viz; generally makes you a bully magnet.

I dont wear hi vis jackets anymore.. everytime I wore it I felt like I was a builder biking it home lol. My flashers are always on though.

I cycle from beresford st to firhouse 2 or 3 times a week at late night and Im always on the look out incase Im pushed of my bike by gurriers or some junkie.

Thanks for all the input. I wear a high viz jacket at work, so figured id just wear it to/from work as an extra precaution.

Im cycling through a part of Coolock, and the mentioned pub/club has had a bit of trouble from what I have heard. Also seen a burnt out car there going to work last sunday, so mustve been a bit of trouble there.

Im sure it will be fine, was more looking to find out what other people do than advice on what to do myself.

If it were me, I'd cycle an alternative route that avoids the pub/ dangerous areas.

That seems like the best idea. Although Coolock is sort of sectioned off by Clonshaugh Industrial estate, the M50 connector and the Malahide road.

If its unavoidable, just put the boot down when passing by. Drunks will only notice you if you're stopped or going slow.

I'd ditch the hi-viz and cycle a new route if possible. I've cycled through some rough areas, an ex-GF lived in Drimnagh and I had no problem cycling home late at nights over the course of about 7 months and I'd seen my fair share gang violence and haven't had any trouble.

The only places I ever have problems is Seville Place where little feckers who have no hope in their future throw rocks or on the canal cycle track between Clondalkin and the Outer Ring Road where there's a fair few gob****es who will jump out at me, stand in my way in groups, smash bottles or stand at the pedestrian gates smoking or drinking. Money well spent...

So considering the amount of late night cycling I do and in the places I frequent nothing has really happened.
