Joseph O'Brien (28) is in the Witness Protection Programme and receives the money – which includes rent and healthcare allowances – for himself, his partner and two children.
Full name and witness protection in the same sentence, you're doing it wrong.

Well, I haven't read the story, but I assume without getting this guy to testify against whoever was convicted, the other murderer(s) would be free?

The reason they put people in the witness protection program is because their identities are already known to those who are likely to want to cause harm to them.

As such giving other people the name he presumably no longer goes by isn't an issue.

Sure, he is in witness protection he needs some sort of income.
I know he could work, but maybe he is afraid to mix with others etc.
Yes he played a part in the murder, but only for him the other killers would be on the loose.

Why is he being rewarded with so much money?
45K a year and equivalent of €65K gross?

There are families struggling on half of that and they still have to pay property taxes and the like while this guy sourced a vehicle for a murder and gets paid this kind of money. He is actually amongst the best paying civil servants except he does have to do any work?

    This is absolutely disgusting.

he was a supergrass, probably with the potential to give evidence to take down a major king pin or something.

Society gets a pay back for the money. Not just the murderers that were put away in his individual case. But the existence of such a program weakens the bonds of fear/trust that exist in any criminal enterprise on a general basis. If it is possible to betray your fellow scumbags and live out the rest of your life with your family free of fear then you are more likely to do so. Then all scumbags always have to consider the possiblity that the guy beside them will do exactly that. So there is an intangible but definite benefit.

Didn't read the link, is it 45k you get for EACH murder? Is that gross or net? Probably fck all after the USC/ levies, you'd be better off on the dole :( Still, at least there's work out there if you want it.

Here's some deal for you, Sammy 'The Bull' Gravano was allowed to keep 8 million dollars in illegally gained assets as well as his Witness protection money.

He admitted to 19 mob hits to get that deal.
His testimony put John Gotti away and damaged the top tier of the Gambino Crime Family. 20 years on Bull's back in prison for re offending and the Gambinos are still active, doesn't seem worth it looking back, they would have got Gotti eventually without him.

Need a place to stay overnight? Abuse a Garda and get some shelter for the night.

Need a new house in a new country? Take part in a murder and give the Gardai information on it.

    Easy.

I see the merit in the witness protection program, help the guy start a new life, new place to live, new identity etc....but i dont see the justification in paying him well in excess of the average industrial wage per annum!
