    Hi All,

I've just started cycling (ex footballer with a bad ankle injury) and I have a mountain bike obviously with mountain bike wheels nothing too fancy bought it off a friend for 80 euro and its a decent bike in good nick and good for what I need it for I have been doing a 10k cycle 3 times a week but would like to start increasing the distance.
I would like to add better tyres to the bike so my question is can i buy hybrid wheels and replace the mountain bike wheels or would I have to start buying new cogs and gears and all that stuff. Thanks in advance.

Parts are expensive, new chain =€10, rear cog €20, chainrings €10 each, then you'll need the tools, cheapest kit I know of is €25, Tyres min €10 each, also mountain bikes are generally 26" wheels and Hybrid/ road are 700c so the rim brakes won't be compatible and rims won't fit the frame.
You can pick up a reasonable ex display or last years model hybrid type bike for around £200 from some of the UK stores so that's worth bearing in mind.
http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/index.html try here, the raleigh metro looks value depending on size.
Also distance isn't the only way to train using a bike, I've a hill quite near me and up and down it 6 different ways off road leaves me spent, I might cover 10-15k in 1.5 hours but it's a hell of a lot of fun + no lorrys. If that MTB has a granny ring and some low gears give that a try.

Ok so it's not as easy as just replacing the tyres or wheels. There is a hill in my estate too which I could and have used in the same way as your explaining but to be honest I'd prefer to do a bit of distance cycling too as I find the other a bit boring. Thanks for the advice.

Bought slick tyres for 15e each of ebay for the 24" MTB wheels easier than I thought, really enjoying the cycling!!
