Do you need the diesel. Manual and poverty spec isn't nice. You'd pick up a top spec 250 automatic for less than that. Tax is over a grand though. Not sure about the 220d,but the 250 is one of the most reliable cars on the road.

They're comfortable cars, I'd find it hard to imagine the 220d isn't a reliable machine.

Curious as to how lexus will do in this segment with the new is. They've discontinued the diesel and have opted for a hybrid model instead? I can't imagine I'll see many in this country.

The 2.2 litre engine in the IS is known for head gasket failure and the gearing is crazy on them making the high gears almost useless.

There are much better cars out there. OP did you look at the Honda Accord?

Does the lex 2.2 has same gearbox and engine as avensis ? these are beloved taxis so must be reliable

As said above, the gearing is abysmally bad on the IS220d. You can't use 6th unless going downhill.

    Dont do it man!!

I bought one of these new in 2007. Beautiful looking car-still is. Not long after i bought it -1 year- i was driving one day and it lost power and wouldn't go above 40 kph. They covered it under warranty to be fair.
In summer 2011 I had an injector issue so that was 1500 quid. it was loosing power big time. Ironically something came up on the dash about an egr valve.

The crowning glory was before xmas when the head gasket went. I contemplated seeing if i could get it patched up and offloaded on donedeal but mu conscious got the better of me. Cost me about 3500 inc labour for an engine-think it was a reconstructed one. I bought the engine off the dealer but paid cash to one of their mechanics to do it to save a bit-i cant get tax relief anyway. He told me that he's done 41 of these on the lexus id diesel and thats just in one lexus garage. He told me that the diesel is being discontinued due to reliability issues. No doubt lexus will say different.

The car tax isn't far off 1k for 06 or 07 models so thats another consideration. The tank average-if these things are to be believed-is about 7.5l per 100km. I bought a new passat last jan-1.6- and it's avg is 5!! This goes up on country roads. ideally you're gonna drive this car at about 80kph steady to get lowest avg consumption-though you could say similar about any other car. The passat is a much nicer drive. it's very forgiving when you're in the wrong gear. As stated above, the gearing is poor. Changing up you feel as if you haven't the car revved up enough changing from the lower gear. i'm constantly changing gears with it. It's the second worst investment of my life after my negative equity house!!

    So in conclusion, avoid.....avoid......avoid!

I still think they are one of the nicest looking cars around. Always turn my head.

The IS220 came in two grades of diesel. If you can get your hands on the sport spec the gearing is different to the SE and Luxury spec and are nicer to drive. I am surprised to hear so many people saying the 2.2 is unreliable.
It's the same one found in Toyota's avensis and while not the most refined unit (def not a patch on BMW's or better yet Hondas newer iDTEC) it is not something I have hard is very unreliable. At worst i found it fairly unrefined compared to Honda's but then again... what is ?!

I'd echo he first poster though... if you can go and try out the Petrol Automatic. The 2.5 V6 is creamy smooth, bulletproof and a beautiful drive. The petrol also looks much nicer too with more agressive bumpers and twin exhausts which really finish it off nice. They depreciate like boat anchors because people are terrified of paying 1k tax. But the savings you will make buying the car will pay for a lot of fuel and road tax and give you a savage ride.

Just for some balance, I've had an is220d for the last five years and it's been almost flawless. I'm just after crossing 295,000km andi in all that time I've only had a DPF and go. I also changed the Dmf really as a precaution.
The dpf failure was sorted with a dpf delete, so it won't repeat. I've serviced it myself from 165k. The engine still pulls great and amazingly it's on it's original turbo. If you keep them well serviced they'll do very high miles. Just use high quality oil and keep the Egr valve cleaned.

I dunno why people complain about sixth gear, i find it fantastic. Keeps the mpg above 43mpg on almost every trip.

The only Avensis which shares the same engine as the IS220d is the D-CAT model, which was never sold in Ireland until the current model came out in 2009. The 150 bhp 2.2 is a different engine to the 175 unit found in the IS220d.

The 2.0 diesel, which the vast majority of Avensis diesels have, is a very reliable engine, and is the one pretty much every taxi will have. The 2.2 175 bhp unit is well known for its head gasket problems.

    Hi,

    I stand corrected.... http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic/70967-is220d-head-gasket-gone/
But apparantly it affects some and not ALL is220d's.
It looks like Lexus UK have been extending the cost of repair and warranty out to 110k miles for this issue. Lexus Ireland have probably followed suit.... does anybody have any experience?
