Bought a 2.8 jap import , it could start ten times in a row and then it might fail to start twice in a row, like a grinding noise, is this likely to be, a solenoid, a starter motor, or ring gear trouble, needless to say it started fine the 5 times I started it when looking at it,

Starter motor most likely, sounds like the little clutch inside is failing to engage, or the splined bendix is just worn, and is slipping on the worn teeth. It should be a simple recon job at an auto electricians. Usually costs between €80 and €120 to do. Cheaper if you take it out of the jeep yourself.
