Hi, I'm not here to have a go at Christians - there is enough on this site as there is but I wanted to request information though I'd suspect that the request may be a little obscure.

I've been reading up on the genocide trial of Rios Monnt, the US-backed military dictator of Guatemala in the 80's who is/was charged with the deaths of 10's of thousands. Rios Monnt is a born-again Christian and a member of the Californian based "Verbo" Church. He was backed by the Christian Right in the US, most prominently by Pat Robertson.

It's any information on Verbo that I'd be grateful of.

A cheeky supplementary request would be any informantion of Saad Haddad's religious background. Haddad, also born-again was a commander of the SLA - who again carried out massive atrocities and were championed and supported by the Christian Right.

This is obviously just an innocuous request for information on a Californian church.

I'm just curious as to why you titled it The Christian Right & Violence.

Monnt was in power for 17 months, from March 1982 to August 1983, during which time the estimate of non-combatants slaughtered by his forces were in the many tens of thousands (during a civil war that lasted 36 years). While I am sure the US Christian right supported him, as indeed they supported all anti-communist efforts, the support that mattered in terms of economic support and weapons unsurprisingly came directly from the Reagan administration and the Israelis. In a visit at the height of the slaughter Reagan referred to him as "a man of great personal intergrity and commitment, who wants to improve the quality of life for all Guatemalans and to promote social justice".

At the time US foreign policy was "communists bad, anti-communists good", and a blind eye was turned to atrocities in the greater "good" of exterminating anything that smelled of communism. Guatemala was one one of many countries in central and south America that suffered horrendously due to the foreign policy of the Reagan administration. A shameful time in recent US history.

Interestingly, the human right commission that investigated him and led to his trial was headed up by his brother, who is a RC bishop. The Catholic church were a major thorn in the side of the brutal dictatorships in Latin America at the time and many were slaughtered for their efforts.

The more correct title for your thread in my opinion would be The Reagan goverment and Violence.

From the attached, the Verbo seem no different to the many dozens of Christian organizations who do missionary work in south America, the link to Monnt seems a little odd given they were supposedly providing aid to some of those he was accused of targetting (the Ixil Indians). Another interesting tidbit is that the "Verbo" originated as a Christian communal group based in Humboldt county, the pot capital of California.
