Cycling clubs Westport Covey wheelers and Western Lakes of Ballinrobe, will be hosting a midsummer weekend of cycling suitable for cyclists of all abilities.

This first of its kind weekend of cycling will be held in July and will bring cyclists through spectacular scenery in west Mayo and Galway. Cyclists of all abilities will have 2 challenging routes to choose from - an 80km or a 160 km route.

There will also be a family fun day to involve all the family, this will involve a short spin along the "Green Way".

We will also be staging a "Crit" on the streets of Westport on the Saturday evening, add this to the nightlife of Westport and you will have a weekend you won't forget in a hurry!

The event will sponsor the good work being done by Pieta House in suicide prevention.

    €45, Really???

    Thats way to much.

I would have thought the price was about right considering its supporting Pieta House and you get a jersey. That does not seem to be the norm with most large scale Sportifs, Croi and Ring of Kerry spring to mind. Tour of Connemara was €45 euro and while you got a gilet, all the profit went to a private company. Overall I think it's a good idea for an event, especially the evening crit. But that's just my opinion.

As mentioned in the other post. The money is going to Pieta house and not a company.

I'm signing up. Yes €45 is a little bit steep but it's a good cause and a couple of nights in Westport is always nice. Looking forward to it.

Patjoe, are there still jerseys available for entry at this stage? I previously saw some mention of needing to have entered by end of May to get one...

Hi Patjoe, am I still in time to get a jersey? Also do you have any info about sizing?

Sorry if I've missed it somewhere on the event website.

A really enjoyable day yesterday despite the heat. Very nice route for the 80k. The first 50k from Westport to Leenane is very scenic and is spectacular down through Doolough and on to Delphi and Killary. The road home to Westport is a bit ho hum but still enjoyable. A little headwind down the valley made the most scenic section also the toughest. Thanks to the lad from Claremorris who stayed with me for the last 20k and passed the time talking football.

Food stop in Leenane was grand, plenty of everything, I'd say everyone in the village was eating left over sandwiches and cake last night.. I'll certainly be back if you do it again next year. Only little quibble, I know it's a good cause but it was a little bit pricey compared to others. It's a weekend away for me and as I say I'll definitely be back, but it might scare off the locals. Oh and the ice cream at the end was very welcome. And big respect to the lad that I passed (twice..). He was on a heavy enough looking mountain bike with a big bag on the back and he was dressed in a t shirt, football shorts and flip flops. Hardy man, he made it all the way.

So see you again next year. A really good first effort and given the charity involved I hope it goes from strength to strength

great day out and really enjoyed the heat... we won't get many days like that around here! did the 80km with the wife. ice cream was a nice treat after it instead of throwing down some cider to cool us off! :-)

wife had ordered an XS jersey but there weren't any left so she was going round in a very baggy small one which was a little disappointing... if there wasn't going to be enough sizes why ask on the sign up what size you were!

great food at leenaun and plenty of water. good emphasis as well on telling everyone to keep watered up and sunscreen. plenty of water stops up to leenaun which was good for anyone with only 1 bottle cage.

all in all a great day out and really enjoyed the Crit in the town at 8pm.

A great day out I have to say, thoroughly enjoyed it. A very well organised event, especially for the first effort, kudos on the blueberry muffins at each stop.... delish!

Will definitely be down for it again next year all going well
