Over 70 and Scared of Eye Test for Driving

My Dad is 73 and has some problems with peripheral vision but not so bad that he cannot drive, however his license is now due for renewal and he is quite apprehensive about the whole process. Has anyone here know anyone who has had to go through this process recently ? How stringent is the eye test?
