Does anyone know if the G8 summit will bring back Air Force 1 to Dublin Airport? I know Obama's wife and kids are due to stay in Dublin. Maybe they will fly into Belfast International and chopper around then?

I read somewhere on Twitter that AF1 will land in Belfast and Obama will be choppered to Fernmanagh. Not sure about the family. There is a huge restriction on traffic around Belfast and Knock apparently to cope with the arrivals.

Id like to hope theyd be coming up here thanks very much. The g8 is here after all. Im actually flying out a day or two after and Easyjet sent us an email warning about delays.

Can anyone confirm if Knock is being used for G8 arrivals? But then again I suppose that's something we are not meant to know.

I've heard that some will be going to Knock but mostly to Belfast due to runway and parking capacity. You should expect some G8 arrivals there but you might not be able to see it with high security.

Would love to see AF1 land in Knock even though that's not going to happen I know. Runway is long enough anyway :)

Whats the closest airport to the summit, including road transit time etc ?

It's an option, if you did your research first you would know that a good number of delegate countries have booked accommodation in the south for the G8.

Can Aldergrove handle that many large aircraft at any one time ?

Are you foreal? Belfast international is far bigger than Knock.

Qwenc's NI vs ROI chip raises it head again.

Its not about size. Its about security concerns.

BFS is a busy airport, lots of VIP arrivals may impede normal ops. NOC is a quiet airport in the middle of no-where that would allow pretty much total control to the security operation. In addition NOC is closer to the G8 summit than BFS.
Less traffic (aircraft, vehicular, pedestrian) makes it easier to control the security zone.

I was in Chicago last year for the Afghan security summit. ORD is one of the worlds largest airports....what a freaking mess ORD was for those 3 days.

I wouldn't call Knock Airport "the middle of nowhere" but compared to Belfast its rural and probably alot easier to police. Will be interesting to see if any G8 leader's aircraft actually land in Knock.

The real question is, why doesn't BFS have as many Tatl services as SNN?

On first contact with Belfast approach he requested two ILS approaches to runway 25 - after all it was doing a test run for next month's summit.

It would have to be St Angelos :-)

It's got nothing to with size. When POTUS comes he comes with 4-5 heavy aircraft at once. When Putin travels he takes more aircraft recently to Amsterdam he took 8-9 aircraft now go through everyone else. My point is can Aldergrove handle all those aircraft and park them securely. The answer is no they will need to be spread out. That's my point.

Head of state, ministers, family, military officials, advisers, security team, intelligence officials, press etc.

Maybe 9 is a bit too much

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=83974289

This has been discussed at the transport committee.

    http://oireachtasdebates.oireachtas....J2012120500012

[Deputy John O'Mahony: ] That would be ironic, from the point of view of what has been stated about membership of the trust and board being on a voluntary basis, given current discussion around membership of boards, fees, money wastage and so on. Reference has been made to the report outlining the potential for 500 jobs. As stated, that report was published in 2010. Obviously it is not only this Government that has not engaged or rolled out any potential in this regard. I would welcome a response from the witnesses on that issue.

I was interested in Mr. Gilmore's comment in regard to the width and length of the airstrip in Knock. I note that the G8 summit in June is to be held in Fermanagh, which is approximately 60 or 70 miles from Knock. Obviously, other airports will be involved. I heard by way of conversation last week that 5,000 journalists will be working on that summit and that one television station

Chairman: Are they coming in to Knock airport?

    Deputy John O'Mahony:
has block booked a hotel in Donegal. Is the Knock airport airstrip big enough for Air Force One?

Chairman: We must conclude questions at this point.

Senator Paschal Mooney: Money will also be needed for work on the N16 to ensure their speedy passage through Sligo to Enniskillen.

Mr. Liam Scollan: The answer to the Deputy's question is, "Yes, it is." As we stated earlier, we do not wish to become embroiled in a political battle on this issue. The focus for us is Knock airport and the Knock region. The Deputy is correct that the report was commissioned under the previous coalition, led by Fianna Fáil. In fairness, it was not activated under that Administration.

Deputy Dara Calleary: When was the final draft agreed and delivered?

Mr. Liam Scollan: In late 2010. I am stating facts. It is up to members to make excuses or clarify issues. I am just saying it was not activated.

Chairman: Is the airport being used for the G8 summit?

Mr. Joe Gilmore: There is full capability at the airport to land any aircraft. We would like to facilitate the summit. However, that is a matter for the two Governments.

I think you'll find the runway at Knock (officialy 'Ireland West'), is one of the longest in these islands.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 5,524 ✭✭✭owenc

Belfast is longer at 9,121 feet. Only Shannon is longer.

Too risky to carry so many important people in 1 aircraft. Look at the Polish Govt Tu-154 crash about 3 years ago.

As stated above, all those aircraft may not be on the ground at the same time. But lets look at the US contingent....2-3 C-5's to carry helicopters and limo's. Another C-17/C-5 to carry in the ground security team. Then the arrival of the Pres....VC-25 plus a B757 (using the DUB visit as an estimate). Then that same number to remove the equipment after the visit.

Now multiple that by 4 and you get a rough number of aircraft that need security and space on the airfield ramp. (I am assuming that the others would not have the logistical train that the US have.......maybe Russia will try to match dicks with the US?)

On that last point...Russia should charter the AN-225 just to make a point...park it beside the C-5 and laugh.....

Cork's is slightly shorter but it has great quality and gets plenty of use, that's all that matters.By the way I am talking about runway length.:P

Up in Irvinestown at a wedding and a private something or other came in low over us heading into St Angelo's. Fairly decent police/security presence here already.

Would there be a chance of people being able to see whatever planes would come into Knock for the G8? A 767 would be a rare sight there (if there's ever been one there!)
