    Hi

Just a query for when dealing with companies such as Eircom, UPC and others over the phone. As most if not all tell you they may record the call can you do the same or do you need to tell the person that answers that you are recording it as well?

    Regards

You have to tell them as soon as they answer the phone, they will usually consult with a supervisor and then continue the call. I find it great for getting to the point especially with banks.

You can record the call, but it is only admissible if you inform them prior to this.

Policy at most companies is to terminate he call once they have been informed they are being recorded.

:) Thats what i though i.e they would hang up or get advice before continuing. I did assume you would need to tell them first thing but wanted to see what people though.

Posters - questions about smartphones can be asked in an appropriate tech forum.

Companies record my calls all the time, twice I have had to have a call found and played back to me as the notes on my account were wrong. After that I decided to record my calls, already I have had a complaint against a bank upheld as I submitted a transcript of the call.

Do you advise then that you are recording the calls? By law you must.

Of course, see my post above, I have never had anyone end the call.

    Must you?
According to the Interception of Postal Packets and Telecommunications Messages (Regulation) Act 1993, referenced in post #5 there is no such obligation since apparently it's enough that only one party has consented.

This might be a better topic for the Legal Discussion forum

I believe a company is obliged to inform a private individual if a call is being recorded, under Data Protection legislation.
But it doesn't work the other way because a private individual isn't considered a 'data controller'.
But don't quote me on that. :pac:
