If porn movies have thought me anything, it's customary to have sex with them

I'm guessing you've already paid for delivery, so unless he does an extra fine job of delivering, i.e. unpacking it, helping you move it into the final location and taking away the packing, no.

If there just dropping it at the door, no. If the have to carry it up ten flights of stairs, perform amateur acrobatics to get it through the door and move it around the room half a dozen times until it's where you want it, I'd throw them a tenner, at least.

they get paid to do that job. you paid for the couch, and probably it's delivery.

Be a complete and utter bastard about it.

You: "That's great, thanks for delivering that. Would you like a tip?......."

    Delivery guy: "Ah no.......you're gran......"

You: *Starts sniffing* "Change your deodorant........*

    :pac:

I would only tip when someone gives a good service, like in the hairdressers where the junior gives a nice head massage while washing my hair ect, or in a restaurant where the staff don't roll their eyes and make you feel like they don't want you there.

I would not tip people for doing their job, like bringing a sofa you've already paid like 40 euro to have delivered, the same way as I would not tip in a restaurant that put a service charge on my bill.

They only have to deliver it to your door, if you are expecting them to bring it in, I'd recon you should tip them.

These lads are probably on min. wage or a little above, and it is heavy work,so as long as they do the jobs you want them to do,tip each man about an hours wage.karma.

Why is any of this the OP's concern?

Because it's usually more appropriate to tip people on lowly paid jobs than highly paid ones, if you were that way inclined of course.

    Don't tip.

An employee should be properly remunerated through their basic wage.

A tip is meant to be a gift from you to them saying thank you for going above and beyond. You shouldn't be saying thanks for someone doing what their job requires them to do.

If you get awesome service, then consider it. Otherwise don't.

Does anybody know the hourly wages in tescos for shelf packers, I'm worried now that I'm not tipping them enough. Saw a poor guy lugging heavy bags of potatoes the other day, I only gave him a fiver after he told helped load one in my trolley.

And what about BK & McDonalds wages? I usually only leave €3-4 -they must think I'm a right miserable git.

Do you ask the McDonald's server to take your food to your house, spoonfeed you with it and floss your teeth afterwards?

I worked in furniture delivery about 17 years ago, A tip was always welcome. People were nice, though, as proven again and again those with the big house expected you to assemble the furniture and bring it to wherever they wanted you to, which we did, though they were always the least accommodating with the tip. Like some of the posters here i guess.

Give them a can of Fanta each. They'll just spend the tip money on drugs otherwise.

yes and no, it was my job to deliver, but not to assemble. Delivery was to your front door, but obvious thing like a suite of furniture was brought in to their living room. So to answer your question, it wasn't my job to assemble furniture in people's home. This was done as a courtesy, satisfied?

As someone says, if the lads have to lug up some real heavy furniture up flights and flights of stairs, then it would be nice to tip them then. If it feels right in your heart, then tip.

If it's fairly routine stuff though, don't.

Two guys delivered couch to our gaff, brought it into sitting room and put the casters on. It was bucketing down rain outside and they had to manoeuvre a massive truck through the narrow roads in our estate. OH gave them 20 euro tip. I wouldn't have thought of it to be honest, but they defo deserved it that night!

As with the others, if they just drop it off and have easy access I wouldn't bother, upstairs or anything like that I throw them a few €€

Ah no was just wondering, had a relation that was told they weren't insured to lift a bed upstairs and and had another relation that paid specially for delivery and assembly, though i take it 17 years ago was a completely different place than it is now.

I just think with the country the way it is, it's a little cheeky for someone to expect a tip.

t'was a different place and time alright, 2 punt an hour, 50 hour week, 8-6 5 days, Saturday was overtime though. 70 hr weeks, but some handy long distance deliveries to the other side of Ireland at times.

“Why tip someone for a job I’m capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did, however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.”
    - Dwight Schrute

    I agree.
