New Cassette - chain won't take easiest gear

So I replaced my 11-27 with an 11-28 just to give an extra hand on the hills. I didn't replace the chain because it wouldn't have had a massive amount of wear.

Now the rear derailleur won't index onto the easiest gear (the 28), and it's generally skipping on the other gears. I tried unscrewing the limiter screw a lot of the way out and that seems to work, but I had to unscrew it so far out that it's bordering on loose.

    Any pearls of wisdom?

Odds are you need to either re-index the gears, replace the cable or replace the chain. Or your mech hanger might be a little bent. If you have a friend/club mate who's a good mechanic, ask them to have a look re-indexing, if not, might be best to drop it into a local bike shop.

Presuming you purchased the correct cassette ie 9 speed to replace 9 speed - Try adjusting your cable. Make sure your rear mech is lined up correctly. Take the chain off to align the rear derailleur with the cassette.

You just need to follow the instruction on adjusting a rear derailleur - loads of stuff on Youtube, such as this one http://youtu.be/2j1gSwhsVN8

A stand would help, but you can do it with the bike turned upsidedown on a table etc

If the chain is skipping with a new cassette, particularly under load, then it's probably worn out. Take a look at the old cassette and check it for wear. You can also check the chain for wear.

    There's a picture of a worn cassette here : http://www.londoncyclist.co.uk/fixing-the-most-common-mechanical-problem-with-bikes-in-london/

Thanks for the replies; I started the indexing from scratch again and it seems to be shifting smoothly now.

Now to see how it performs under torque!
