Career Break problems

I have applied for a career break for next year and have received provisional approval from my principal. He has cited "appointment of a suitable replacement candidate" to take my place as a condition which I understand in principle but I do feel however he is standing my way a bit. He has not advertised the job and I have no idea when he intends to do so.
Do I have any rights in this regard? I just don't know what to do....and considering I plan on leaving the country in June I wouldn't mind knowing where I stand.

    Thanks

What are your subjects? I think he should have no bother getting a replacement when he finally gets around to advertising , so many teachers looking for work.

You should have received a formal reply by April 1st. I would work on the premise that the answer you received is full approval. The inclusion of 'suitable replacement' is probably standard language. You'll prob be replaced by two or more part time teachers or by increased hours for someone already in the school. If you're bothered, ask again or get your union to ask for you.

I wouldn't, unless the answer was written and stated that the application was approved.

    Thanks guys

The approval was granted "pending appointment of a suitable replacement".

I am an Irish teacher and I know there is a shortage of them out there, even these days!
My problem is I don't know when my principal plans to advertise the post. I would have thought the sooner the better but I have been reminded more than once I could get a call on August 26th......

    I'm frustrated more than anything

Who 'reminded' you? Surely not the Principal?

    Yes, the principal! Strange?!

I think I'd ring the union and ask the rep to check it out for you.

Or email, and send a copy of your approval letter.

Thanks, I hate to make a 'union issue' out of it but needs must I think at this stage

This is not a union issue.

Firstly, up until yesterday Principals were not allowed to advertise upcoming vacancies as there were redeployment issues.

Secondly, it would be highly irresponsible of a Board to allow a teacher take a career break if they were unable to get a qualified replacement - Irish teachers are especially hard to find.

Have a quiet chat with your Principal, I am sure he will deal with the issue as best he/she can.

    What were the redeployment issues?

I have approached my principal numerous times with no joy.
I'm not trying to make a big deal but if one party is unwilling to engage in communication I'm not entirely sure what I can do.
I'll play it by ear for another few days.

    Thanks
