Silage additives

    Do many of you use a silage additive? Are they a good idea or OTT and a waste of money?

    I'd like to hear people's opinions.

    Other than in a winter milk set up I can't see it paying back.

    Cutting at the right stage ressesing and weed control would be more important IMO.

    Our silage last year was relatively poor at 78DMD normally make 80-85 DMD haven't used an additive since the nineties. Reseeding and correct harvesting time much more important. In general in the southern half of the country I'd say the quality boat has sailed for this year certainly will be gone before weekend.

    I walked the silage ground today (in West Cork) and I was surprised how little of is has starded seeded. I dont know isvit because of the variety of seed used or the age of the sward or the ****e spring. Hoping to mow on Friday and get some degree of quality. But if I'm after the weekend, i'll definitely have missed the boat.
    The only reason to use additive is if you think the N isn't fully gone out of it and you can't get any wilt due to weather

    A waste of money i'd think. If you put in quality grass you will have good silage. Poor stemmy grass is poor no matter what you put on it. Used to see a lot of lads put molasses on the pit years ago and they seemed to think it was a great job. Probably too costly nowadays though. Just my 2 cents.

    additive and preservative are 2 different things. mollasses is a preservation aid in wet conditions irrespective of date.

    We are using the following silage inoculant for corn silage (Bonsilage Mais)
    So, diller told that minimum storage period is 6-8 weeks becouse of Lactobacillus buchneri.
    What can we do to start to use it earlier? We have no enough corn silage to wait so much.

    A waste of cash i'd think. In the event that you put in quality grass you will have great silage. Poor stemmy grass is poor regardless of what you put on it. Used to see a considerable measure of fellows put molasses on the pit years prior and they assumed it was an awesome occupation. Presumably too immoderate these days however. Simply my 2 pennies.
