Note2 or S4?

    EDIT:

This thread has been changed from my original query to be a thread on news/rumours on the Note 3, due for release sometime in Autumn 2013.

    **Original first post**
So I'm close enough to the time for an upgrade. Currently on S3.

I like the idea of the s pen and what it does on the note. But not sure if it's too big for everyday use.

Has anyone gone from S3 to Note2 or vice versa?

I'd be keen to know if you moved and whether there is something you miss about the old device.

    Thanks

Both great phones but I upgraded from the s3 to the HTC one last month and couldn't be happier with it.

I went from an S3 to a Note 2 - it's big alright, but you get used to it in no time. Never had issues fitting it in my pockets or anything, the battery life is great compared to the S3 and the S-Pen, while pointless for the most part is handy on some websites for browsing.

I would usually trade up to whatever the flagship is when it comes out but there's no moving me away from the Note now. The only thing I would change it for is the Note 3 later in the year.

I dislike touchwiz but if they go down the route of a vanilla android Note 2 like they are with the S4 I'll be having me one of those.

Or you could root it and put on any custom ROM you like, including "stock android" versions :)

As for me I have a Note 2 myself having moved from a Note 1 and a GS2 before that and the S4 has nothing I want/am missing right now. The major features will be ported soon enough via a custom ROM and I'd miss the larger screen. Note 3 for me too I think.

My experience with rooting hasn't been good. Mixture of me being an idiot and many roms missing certain items...mainly me being an idiot though!

I went from Galaxy S2 to the Galaxy Note 2, at first I was afraid I will drop it for some reason maybe it was the size. But the size soon wears off and when you see a friend with an iphone or other type of phone, you do be thinking how do they use such a small phone. And battery life is great. I will not upgrade untill the note 3 come and that is supposedly 5.99 inches.

If you want a Note 2 just wait for the Note 3 which is supposedly on the way sometime this year.

I myself am holding out for that instead of opting for a 2 now

Have you held both in your hand yet? I reckon that's as important as any of the features.
Personally I find the Note and Note 2 just a little too big as a phone, it just seems wrong to me.

On the plus side, massive screen (1/2 inch bigger), massive battery (500 mAh more than the S4) and it sold well and has been out for a while so there should be decent dev support on XDA and similar if you want to root and flash.
The Note might well fill the tablet gap if you don't already have one.

I've the S4 myself, find it just about at the top of the range of sizes I'd want a phone but that's a wholly subjective choice. Smaller screen but higher resolution and more pixels per inch, slightly less dev support as it's so new but given the sales and the Google Edition coming, there's likely to be significant community support in the near future.
S4 has some cool gimmicks but they're exactly that, gimmicks. I've turned most of them off myself OR they only work in Samsung apps (e.g. works in Samsung browser but not Chrome.

Note 2. Just for the battery life

Those smart features aren't that smart

    Iphone4 - se xperia play - note1 -note2 - s4

I found the Note2 to be an amazing phone. I have the Note 10.1 though so my jotting can be done with that. using the s4 a week or so now and battery life isn't far off what I got on the Note2. I just found it that little bit too big, and I'm a whore for new tech.

It really depends on your hands too. I've average hands I would think. I couldn't reach the top left corner of the Note2 comfortably with my right thumb. It really was a 2 hand device, for me anyway.

S4 just feels right. Never thought I'd say it but 5 inches is more than satisfactory :P

S4 is the best looking phone I've had since the iPhone 4. Nice features and camera is superb.

Get the S4. If you can afford it get the one from Google with stock android, it's the most future ready phone on android at the moment. :D

Is it? Damn, was planning to get that once I started working in the Summer. Time to start getting reacquainted with the American cousins, you could do the same! ;)

Just checked, and I'm not due the upgrade as soon as I thought I was. I'm with 3 on an 18 month contract that will be a year old next week. I thought they'd deal on an upgrade and new contract after a year, but they told me today it had to be 14/15 months.

So that puts my upgrade time very close to Note3 time. It'll probably be stupid money compared to the S4 at that stage though.

I was actually stuck between the S4 and the HTC One maid and was following both threads on here but none of them are getting amazing reviews only from the HTC fanboys but if you are to listen to the majority of users neither of them are the perfect device so I'll be waiting for the Note 3 which will improve on all the S4 bugs and mistakes not to mention a new plastic lcd which will be lighter and virtually unbreakable, 3gb of ram, a massive battery and new software features. It's also being released in the first week of september so only 3 months not 5 like someone suggested. Actually how bout you turn this into a note 3 thread for all the leaks and rumours.

Good idea. How do I change the thread title, though?

Your asking the wrong man here I'm only a newbie myself.

Just read an article about the camera on the Note 3 having OIS. Nice!

    Why wait 5 months?

    Isn't it obvious?

For the sake of 5-6 months, you get the latest version of the phone for probably little price difference as I would assume he Note 2 prices will not fall until the Note 3 is released.

May as well wait for a new version seeing as I'll be getting an 18th month contract.

I have a HTC One X at the moment and it's a very good phone so I have no problems hanging on.

Or wait and get a Google Moto X when it's released around October :D

    Yeah, could be an option.

I think I'd like to stick with Samsung, though, as I have a rake of accessories that would work with S4 or Note 2.

The thing that's drawing me to the Note 2 (or 3 if it's out and not crazy money) is the s-pen functionality. I can see myself sketching ideas and instructions to help with my teaching, and then sending pdfs of the screen to my students. It's unlikely the X Phone will be able to do that, but we'll see.
