done deal car sale problem

    Hi guys

I'm looking for a bit of advice.

Its about buying and selling cars on donedeal and such sites. If someone buys a car from you and viewed and drove the car before they purchased it, and then contact you a few weeks later demanding to give the car back and get their money back what should you do?? Is it buyers remorse that they are all of a sudden not happy with it or what should be done???

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx

What are they saying is wrong with it? If its a couple of weeks they could have done anything with it!
I know what I'd be telling them to do....

    Tell them to f off.
These are the typical hard men that think they know it all and want to buy private as cheap as possible yet if there is an issue, they cry like babies.

Did they see the car at your house or in a public place? Regardless they have no come back. Private sale buyer beware. And to make it worse its over its not like the engine blew up.

If there is a semblance of a threat from the buyer, report it to the Guards. If you have a smartphone, you may be able to record the call. The buyer has'nt a leg to stand on in a case like yours.

Paint work not up to scratch? They should have decided that before they bought it, forget it man!
If they want to take it further let them, your completely in the right here, paintwork not in order, tell them to **** off!

    Tell em to fúck off.

Block their number on your mobile. A few clicks and it's done.

If they've threatened you tell you'll be reporting the threat to the gards.

Oh yeah they are just trying their luck with ya to see could they get you to do it. I'd say don't block their number because you can have all the messages there and don't block the calls, or will it block messages?
They'll give up when they get nowhere, but if you're worried I'd go to the guards with the threatening messages.

Report it the threat to the Guards, even if they only file it.

They have no comeback unless you are in the motor trade or they can prove you knowingly sold a dangerous car. Caveat Emptor.

This is true, but its not the attitude you want to take with the buyer. Quoting Caveat Emptor makes it look like you know there's nothing they can do and knew that when you sold it.

I'd just be firm with them, tell them that you had the car for x time and never had hassle with it and that you're sorry but there's nothing you can do now, you have a new car etc and don't need your old one back/have spent the money etc.

You have to take into account that the buyer has threatened the seller already, anyone who says they will get "it the hard way or the easy way" has no appreciation for tact.

If the OP sold a good car in good faith to the best of his knowledge and allowed the buyer the opportunity to bring a mechanic it's on the buyers head. Threats will get the seller nowhere but neither will placating him, I would be firm, tell him how it stands and your sorry he isn't happy but he's free to seek legal advice.

Ask them what they mean by the hard way in a text. If they are thick enough to text back a physical threat then go straight to the Gardai. You didn't happen to keep their address before posting of the registration book to help the Gardai track them? Even the Reg number should do.

However in answer to your question tell them to **** off and hold firm. They'll blow off a bit of steam and then give up.

I bet they just wanted a car for a couple of weeks, to go on a trip somewhere.
Now they want their money back. Ultra cheap car hire, if they get away with it.

I'd be checking the milage on it now, if it were me.

Exactly. Pass the messages and the buyers details onto the Gardai, make a formal report about the threat, and ignore all contact.

They have no case, if they mean solicitor (hard way). Don't entertain them at all. Car was fine when sold no comeback. Everybody buying second hand cars privately knows this.

Sorted. Ask what they mean by "hard way", and should they responf or not, show the threats to the Gardai so that they have it on record. Also, give the address that you had the reg book sent to, to the Gardai.

I hear of this happening alot on here. I personally sold a road quad a couple of years ago. It was a year old and worth about 3k new. It had less than 50 miles on the clock (i won't go into that). Couple of lads from Poland bought it for €650 and I even delivered it from Dublin to Leitrim for that price. A few weeks later, they called and said they wanted their money back, because screws were coming loose. What they didn't know was that they lived one estate down from a friend of mine and I had seen them using the quad in a field. Loose screws? This was on the fairing. Chancers.Claimed to know their rights and that citizens advice were notified. I get a call from the citizens advice about it. Explained the situation to the lady. She asked if I intended on refunding any money, to which I said NO. They got a great dealand whined about screws getting loose when they were using a road quad in a field

Stick to your guns OP. I bought an Austin Mini a month ago. Seller was a total con artist. Car was presented well, but had a few expensive and purposely hidden proplems. It has cost me a fortune to get the car fixed and it is now ready to pass an NCT. I will sell it, because it will only be a reminder of the pain it caused me.

Exactly, op don't let this put you off, I had a couple try do this to me before because a couple of weeks later they done one of those health checks at a garage. They got a list of 2 tyres and I think front pads, something real silly.
Regardless they came back saying the car was a disgrace and they were going to court with it and all, that the car hadn't been minded at all.

Anything else I've sold has been grand, once your truthful that's all you need to worry about. Forget them after that :)

Depending on what you are selling (Honda civics, Opel Corsa, etc.) some ads seem to attract every messer in the country. Dozens of texts asking if you will swop for horses/motorbike/drink etc. Stupid offers and downright abuse.
Next time buy a Tesco Sim card for your Ad and just take it out when the item is sold .
