Sat nav / android

I've done some googling on this but still not sure....

So, can I download an app to my phone that will give me sat nav without using data? I've used Google maps a few times but it needs the 3g.

I'm heading to France in a few weeks. The car rental company refuses to quote for sat nav rental.... So i started looking at Amazon to buy one myself, but I'll never use it again when I'm home so now I'm thinking can I just use my phone?

Don't mind paying for an app if there's a good one.

    Thanks very much.

You might get a better answer over on the GPS forum.

Yes you can. For example Sygic. You download the map you want using Wifi to your Sd card or phone.

In this case I think its a European map, and it will work in France, only using the GPS.

    Which Phone do you have?

I use Sygic. It's quite good but like any GPS or navigation app you can't rely on it 100%. For europe, it's based on tomtom maps.

    Galaxy S3

Ye so your GPS will be good, I think you can have a 7 day free trial of Sygic, check it out on the play store.

You can pre-download maps through the google maps app on android which will work as a normal GPS app when you load the saved maps up.
Just go to settings, zoom in on the area you want and select make offline. For France, you would have to download a couple of map areas as it wont allow you to download the whole country in one go.

I used to have a HTC, and with that, it had its own pre-loaded navigation software on android. All I did was pay €4.99 for the license for France and I had data free sat nav, using the phone's GPS. It was pretty accurate too.

I use NavFree. It's very good and you can save the maps you want to use while you're offline.

I always rely on Android GPS, using data though but if you have unlimited plan you are grand.

While sygic says its an app with offline maps...Ive lost count of the amount of times you start the app and its required to download updates of 125 megabytes or bigger and you cant start it unless you get the updates, I would go for copilot or navfree myself..

Co-Pilot is very good. Also make sure you have a charger for the phone as with GPS on the battery will drain a lot quicker than usual.

Another option would be to pick up a pre-pay sim card over there with a decent data plan and just use Google maps. We did this in Poland and worked perfectly.

I've used Navigon since 2009. I find it to be the best one with the most up to date maps and features.

I think it's €40 or so for all of Europe.

Google maps will allow offline maps but will still need data connection to calculate navigation.
