Problem when fuelling a 2008 focus 1.6tdci

    Hi all,
I recently purchased a 2008 focus estate, and I noticed a couple of things,
after fuelling there is a pool of diesel under the car (that come out of a little rubber pipe, probably the overflow?). When the fuel tank is full, the fuel gauge goes from full to 3/4 in around 30 miles, yesterday I filler her up until I reached the first fuel nozzle stop, a bit of diesel was dripping from the overflow, but the fuel gauge was only at 3/4 full.
The maximum fuel I put in the car was 47litres from empty (15 miles range) to full. I think the capacity of the tank should be around 53 litres, I doubt there is a 6 litres reserve.

    Any help is greatly appreciated

6 litre reserve tank sounds about right. But the pool of diesel under your car certainly doesn't! I'd be getting a mechanic to give it a good look over anyway... As for fuel gauges I could put €20 in mine and have the tank reading a full tank so it's not something I worry about.

I calculate my mpg on distance and litres used.

Anything between 5 to 10 litres would be normal. I had a Yaris which would take 36L but the 'tank' is rated at 45L. The reserve is a mixture of the tank not being completely empty when you start plus distance to the, fuel pump, engine etc.

The leak is not normal. Get that checked out. Theres no 'overflow' in a car tank.

I had/have a 2006 1.6 tdci estate back home. It's got a 55L tank and the most I've ever been able to put in when fully brimming it to the max was about 48L. Never had any issues with diesel under the car. Are you sure you're not filling it up and diesel is running down the body under the car?

The fluid is coming out of that rubber pipe near the rear wheel.
The average consumption from the car is 5.1litres, from a tracking app I get 5.6litres (80% road 20% motorway).
I 'll bring the car to the dealer during the week & see what he thinks.
