You just need to give him the email address you use for your Paypal account, and he'll use that to transfer the money to your account.

Note you pay a fee to receive money on Paypal

Oh crap, do you? Must have missed that small print. How much is the fee?

5% iirc. You're better off taking a bank transfer or postal order. Paypal are known to screw people over.

I sold a few bits through Paypal. I sold something last week and I noticed that I received the entire amount with no stopages but there was an attachment.

    Reversal

Please be aware that your payment can still be reversed, (e.g. if it is subject to a chargeback), even after you have posted the item to your buyer. Complying with PayPal's protection programs and following the trading guidelines, in our Security Centre helps to protect you from things like chargebacks.

I rang Paypal and was told that even after I sent the item, the buyer could get the transaction reversed.

How much is the item worth and do you know if the buyer is in Ireland.
I hear scam when I hear people wanting to pay with PayPal. Google it.
Especially if they want the items shipped abroad, they are not around to check the item themselves, will send a friend to check it out, they pay more then the amount you have asked for etc. Just be cafeful. Bank transfer/Postal order/Cash would be better.

    (no disrespect to PayPal though).

Yes, its true. I know someone got caught for an item worth €700. They got what they thought was an official e mail from Paypal saying "you got money" but before its released we need proof of postage. The guy went to the post office and posted the item and tried to input the reference number from An Post. His item had left the country before he realized that he had been robbed.

Kinda jumping to conclusions there guys, saying it's a scam?

The OP has already said the ad was on Adverts.ie, so it's highly likely the buyer is in Ireland too.

I've used Paypal for many years, and haven't been scammed, and for me, the convenience more than outweigh the cost of the transaction.

The fee is 3.4% of the value of the transaction, + 35c.

There are fees for bank transfers (depending on the bank) and postal orders as well....

You can take a cash lodgement through the bank, and the buyer pays the postal order fee.

I'm not saying its a scam but OP says he has not a clue about Paypal. Just warning him to check it out fully. In the case I referred to, we told the guy it could be a scam, he did'nt listen and went ahead and lost his wifes wedding dress. Loads of people were caught the same way with wedding dresses. It was on Joe Duffy. The girls dress was in the local post office, she found out it was a scam but was unable to stop the dress from leaving.

You can avoid the fees, if the person sends the money to you as a gift.

Pay as a gift and the buyer has no Paypal protection in the event of a claim

Absolutely not and I don't want to see this turn into a PayPal bashing scam thread, its support for someone who is not familiar with PayPal procedures and making them away scams can exist if they don't watch for the right information.

Done Deal make people aware of money/PayPal scams on their website here.

Adverts.ie is a fine site, I don't like seeing people taken advantage of and conned out of money.
