Certainly the gearboxes on the post 04 D-4D corollas give bearing trouble. A good few vans have had failures so I can only assume that they don't take abuse well. We wore a clutch out of a yaris van in a year but that had the stones driven out of it.

The bearings do get noisy in some of them yes and sometimes at not that high a mileage. When these start getting noisy they must be replaced asap because if the bearings disintegrate untold damage will be done to the gearbox.

It is important to note though that the gearbox will not give bearing trouble in every 1.4 diesel Toyota out there though. I know several with high mileage that haven't given any problems but I do know of some that have had their gearbox bearings changed also. Imo changing the gearbox oil every so often in these is a must to prevent bearing failure or at least prolong their lifespans.
