Im not even sure how to describe this problem, so I cant go about diagnosing it, but basically:

my phone keeps turning its wifi on and off every 5 seconds or so. sometimes it connects to a network, other times not. its not the router. ive tested it on a few different routers, same results.

ive hard reset the phone, ive removed the battery, ive tried it while on charge and off. nothing fixes it.

Anyone have any ideas to throw at me? Ive no access to the mobile internet either as the wifi turns it on and off automatically, and i cant permanently turn the wifi off anyway as it just turns on again, for 5 seconds, then off again :(

I cant afford to do a software/factory reset as im using it in business and cant afford to risk losing any data on it.

    HTC DesireHD
    rooted
Android version: 2.3.5 (Android Revolution HD 6.2.0)
    ENG OFF
    S-OFF

    Thanks lads.

maybe you could try installing a wifi manager app?

    +1 to this.

Lots of options, from Battery Defender to AutomateIt.

Alternatively, maybe you've got an app trying to get a constant Web connection. Twitter and Facebook are the usual suspects, but have a look at your settings for G+ and Google Now if you have them installed.

Did you try AutomateIt? There's a simple thing to set up in that where the wifi is only on while the screen is on, and switched off otherwise. There are a few other things you can do with that app too. Download it, give it a go, and let me know if you need any help with it. I really think it should be able to solve your problem.

Have you tried a complete factory wipe since? It sounds like a rogue app might be causing the issue.

Go into Wi-Fi settings, menu, advanced, and check the settings there.

Note the "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" (make sure it is "Always") and "Avoid Poor Connections" settings (make sure it is unticked).

i did a complete factory wipe, dalvik wipe, cache wipe, updated the clockworkmod recovery, repartitioned the ex4, and reinstalled a completely new rom.

ive been unable to update the radio version though :/
instructions online dont work or something. ive full S-off and Eng-off and a hboot installed.

    wifi sleep policy is never.

best wifi performance (nay consume more power) is untick? should i enable it?

    wifi proxy disabled.

im beginning to think its a hardware issue? :(

EDIT: under wifi proxy, mac address is unavailable. is that normal? is it for the routers mac address maybe, and its unconnected so unavailable?

I read through the thread and am wonder if there had been any workable solution. I am in the process of wiping/factory reset and now am worried I just screwed up the device (sigh).

The WiFi radio has been working fine, but at some point started to not work right. Now when I try to turn it on it will just cycle through turning on then off till at some point it just stops and displays "error".

I have not tried automateit, but is that something that can triage or tell me what is going on with the radio? I guess I am asking is if there is an app that can diagnose what is happening with the WiFi Radio.
