From the Irish Wildlife Trust.Didnt know this myself.

    Irish Wildlife Trust

We've had a number of people inquiring this week about the legality of destroying vegetation and hedgerows during the nesting season.

Under the Wildlife Act it is illegal to cut, grub, burn or otherwise destroy hedges or scrub from the 1st day of March to the 1st of September. Exceptions may be made by a Minister or Government body in cases where health and safety concerns or construction are involved.

I saw where this had been done recently and assumed it just hadn't fully grown back yet. Is there a rough time frame from when a hedgerow has been cut to when it starts to look "normal" again? The hedges I saw looked like they'd been hacked fairly recently but I'm no expert so like I say I assumed

Growth is slow this year so hard to tell. Too late now to do anything about it.

Theres a fella cutting hedges around me. Was brought to court before and judge ruled in his favour as 'he was providing a service for the community':rolleyes: Not sure when the court case was but hes still cutting all year round still.

The legislation is full of exceptions - road safety, building, non-arable lands, easements etc. So it can be difficult to nail some people on it. Still always worth contacting the local authority when you see it however, as it may result is a stop order being issued. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
