    Dear all,

As the title suggests, my SO who is a self confessed flower child wants to try her hand at making soap here in Dublin and we're trying to find somewhere that sells Lye.

I appreciate that drain cleaner provided it is 99% Sodium Hydroxide will fit the bill but have failed in the local Tesco, Centra and Euro store. Anyone know where some can be bought for cash? I'd rather avoid ordering online for this...!

I was told to try small town hardware stores - the problem is that the sodium hydroxide can be used to cook meth amphetamine and so it's not that easy to find anymore.
I'm thinking of having a go at some cold process soap, if I do will let you know if find the stuff here.

Thanks chief, yes I heard that too! Of course we could make our own using ash and rainwater but it takes forever and is very dangerous!

I bought it in Woodies last year, hardware shops might be with a look.

    B&Q used to have it.

If you want tons of it :pac:
    http://www.gouldings.ie/chemicals/our-products/sodium-hydroxide/

People making their own bio-diesel use it too, so try tracking them down.

Also check out Potassium Hydroxide too, IIRC it makes a softer soap than Sodium Hydroxide
