How long does a conviction stay on your file?

I have been turned down a US visa because of a conviction that i thought had been spent.

There is no mechanism in Ireland to expend convictions at present.

The Spent Convictions Bill, 2012 is passing through parliament now, it should become law this or next year and will expend less serious convictions. There will be a set of rules surrounding and expenditure so it will depend if yours will be spent or not.

the Spent Convictions Bill 2012 states clearly (section 8) that spent convictions legislation will not apply where information is sought by another State.
