Should you be getting 105 rather than Tiagra for €1500

    you'll get 105 on a Canyon Roadlite at 1,000 never mind 1,400!

I would certainly want that. Though if you were getting a decent carbon frame then 1500 quid is fair enough considering tiagra is 10 speed now (and probably just old 105)

depends if your going carbon our alu, latter 100% 105

ah ok. the canyon highlighted in your post is still Alu, the cheapest carbon would be this one a 1800:

Employer dependant, some may let you buy online, others may insist on a brick and mortar shop or even a specific shop.

Yes. But it depends on your employer. The BTW scheme does not specify where the bike is bought.

So just need to check if employer will accept online retailer, cool

My bad. So would the general consensus be that for a €1500 full carbon bike, you're only going to really get Tiagra?

To be honest I doubt he'd care, he mainly goes on 60/70km Sunday cycles with his mates, they're all 60+ so not setting the world on fire speed wise, its more to make sure the bike shop isn't pulling a fast one.

I have the 2012 Cube Agree GTC. It was 105 last year they downgraded this year. I also got it for €1250 as far as I remember but it was around June that I got it so late enough in the bike year.

That's interesting. Mind me asking where? It's almost June now so that's a serious difference. They guy in Cycle superstore did mention that Cube has lowered their components, but I still wonder is it way too big a change.

Unless things have changed, you should be able to wangle (is that a real word?) a deal on the bikes in CSS. It's always good - though be no means essential - to buy 'locally' and with a bit of negotiation to get 10% off the prices quote. Certainly if this bike is bought under the BtW scheme you should pay no more than €1400 with CSS.

I know I can (with corporate discount) because I've spent a bit there in the past - so I suspect you'll get a good deal if you negotiate! The guys in there are grand to deal with to....

Tiagra 10s is probably 90-95% as good as 105 - and cheaper to replace parts as they wear. I'd not make that bit become a deal-breaker....

I'd imagine he'd prefer a discount of €100/150 rather than getting a different group set. Loads of places won't do any discount with BTW which annoys me.

To be honest I think he'd be happy on a Lidl bike as long as he has his Rapha hat! hahaha

Yes. A perfectly Cromulent word. :)

I think the only difference I have noted between the tiagra and ultegra groupsets on the two bikes at home is the confidence I would have in the ultegra brakes. Re drive train and shifting I honestly would not say the difference is much.

In future I'd spend the money I saved buying a cheaper drive chain on shifters and brakes.
Tires are up there too for superior grip.
Wheels would be next for speed.

    Bol

Did some wrangling today myself, came away with a Felt F4 2012 carbon frame, ultegra groupset with a saddle bag thrown in for €1550. Value to be got out there.

didn't Desperate Dan or Denis the Menace used to wangle things a lot? One of those comics...

Have a look at Boardman Team Carbon bikes in Halfords, you can get 15% off if you produce an Axa policy/card.

If you want a place to do a discount on the BTW scheme, then you have to make sure that your employer is going to pay cash (or cheque etc.) for the bike rather than use one of the middleman schemes (which costs the lbs). You then need to stress this fact to the shop. There's no reason for them not to give your employer the same discount they'd give you with a wallet full of cash.

    I'd look online, you'd get a rather fetching R872 with 105 for 1400.

Bought it from Cyclebike, bought a few bikes from them and they always do a good deal. CSS were offering a good price as well. Availability was tough, I got the last one in my frame size.

Love the bike, im not very experienced with bikes but I comute and adventure race on it with no problems. Love getting on it every day.

Mine came with 105 group set minus the brakes which are low end Shimano. A year on I just ordered Ultegra brakes, changed the bartape for Lizzard Skins and got screw in bar plugs. Tape was dirty and worn though, plugs were long gone!

You can get yourself a bargain through some wrangling certainly, but you can also wangle a good deal. If you haven't got a cute hoor's nous for wangling, then you have to resort to wrangling.
