Recommendation for a cordless drill

Looking at getting my first cordless drill and looking for recommendations. Would be used for small jobs around the house, putting up fencing, putting together bookcases etc.. and prob for drilling into walls, masonry etc.

What should I be looking for? Any tips?

Would probably only need one battery. Perhaps hammer action would be good, but would I get one of these for about €100?

Any tips for drill bits while I am at it? I've searched the forum and seen some mention that it's better to get one set for wood and a separate set for masonry/metal - is this correct?

Ryobi is not a bad make, it be in the mid price range. I have my one about three years and its been through a lot of Diy, battery is still holding its charge. Don't know if you'll get one for a €100 that will have a good hammer action though.

SDS hammer drill is what you really need for this.

Argos do the "Challenge/Worx" range. If its just DIY around the house you can't go wrong plus they have cheap kits with various bits etc. and you can take the 3yr insurance option. I've bought many expensive tools over the years and now I'd rather buy 3 cheap drills instead of 1 expensive drill.

Thats v true regarding cheap. I needed a blade for an old skillsaw, was €25 for blade but I could buy a new skillsaw with blade for €30.

OP could get get a half decent cordless screw gun and hammer drill like what Paddy displayed for a lot less than €100.

I'd go with a cheap SDS drill for the heavy stuff, as Paddy147 said. And a bosch or similar cordless drill driver for your wood drilling/screw driving jobs.

Should be able to get both for a about €130.

B&Q in Liffey Valley regulary sell off power tools at the back of their shop.

They have a clearence section where products that have damaged packaging are sold off at up to half price.

I bought a MAC 18v 2 speed cordless screw gun for 50 euro there a while ago...reduced from 99 euro
2 x Lithium fast charge batteries and a set of drill bits and screw bits in the kit, nylon carry bag aswell

Charges from flat to full in 45 minutes.
Great little screwgun and well happy with it.:)

I got the Parkside SDS/Impact drill in Lidl for 35 euro...again a great bit of kit.Came with carry case and 5 different drill bits and chisel bits.
It flys through concrete walls and also breaks up concrete and brick too....(see pic above).

Sorry for jumping in this thread

I bought a cordless drill in the last few days :

    http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/7114535/Trail/searchtext%3E18V+DRILL.htm

    2 gear which is handy.

I can't recommend it yet as haven't used it really yet

Charged the battery there and fired it up.

I havent actually used the drill yet for actual drilling work etc.

There are slits at the back of the drill. When I run the drill , there appears to be a slight spark/light coming from inside the drill - which I can see through the slits.

    Is this normal ?

I bought a bosch 18v lithium battery drill when i bought my house 3yrs ago. It done a lot of work. A lot of concrete drilling done with it to. A couple if 13mm holes in concrete with that. The battery lasts a long time and also holds the charge for months inbetween uses. Which i used to hate with the older batterys. Everytime you wanted to use it, it was dead.
I would definetly recomend it. Bought for 110 euro on sale in b&q. I found piranha masonery drill bits very gud.

As long as there isnt a strong smell of burn your ok. The sparking is the brushes giving power to the rotor in the drill

Oh ok, so nothing to be alarmed about or no need for me to think about returning it.

Do most drills do this sparking thing ?

as far as i am aware they all do but some you cant see due to the coverings. i am open to correction on that. all the drills i used did spark

    The sprark is normal.

If you see a slight bit of smoke or get a funny smell, then put it down and let it cool down for 5-10 minutes.

Cordless power tools can and do overheat sometimes when given too much of a working.

If you are going to be doing any amount of masonry drilling, the go wired SDS. Unless you want to spend hundreds on a proper sds cordless. And I mean several hundred.

Bit of a bump, what did you go for in the end OP?

Im also looking for a drill for around the house DIY work. I've had a couple of Argos drill's in the past with the most recent one after giving up over the past few day's on me so would love to get a good recommendation around the €100 mark that will stand me well

B&Q - dewalt / makita 18v for around €100. Or lidl this week have the 18v parkside cordless for €70 I think. Eitherway, all sound for general light DIY.

i bought an DIY 18v dewalt around 3 years ago. a lot of abuse work done and still going strong. was around 130 in b&q at the time

Always check the weight of the battery, a good battery should be solid and heavy.

Herself bought me an Argos crap one years ago. Best thing I did was smash the crap out of the battery to discover 2 tiny little light round batterys inside it.

    I've a solid B&D 18v + 2 batterys for years now. + I'm a tradesman useing it all the time.

Cordless are not great for real heavy duty ie masonry unless your willing to spend money. Ordinary 220v DIY drills are cheap.

Always get two batterys for obvious reasons.

Any chance you can throw me a particular model number on a dealt or makita that would be good?

Forgot to mention I have a corded hammer already so looking for cordless for odd jobs but that can still, take some abuse over time if needed

Taken from the UK site but they are always available in the Liffey Valley for around €110-€120. They are both capable drills. Just down to personal preference really.
