We are in the process of buying a house and when we get settled I would like to start doing up a few of the rooms. The whole house needs a good painting and it was used as an investment property since it wasbuilt 8 years ago so it's not got that "home" touch. I wouldn't be of a creative mind naturally so I think I need to draw some inspiration from a few magazines. There are quite a lot of magazines in Easons but I don't know what ones to get or which ones are any good.
I wouldn't be a minimalist, architectural person. More homely, warm and tidy. My husband doesn't mind what we do as long as it's not pink and not too expensive.

Are there any magazines you would recommend or even websites to look at?

Great ideas on www.houzz.com where you can set up your own ideas book & save the pictures that appeal to you all in one place..

Congrats on the house. Exciting times!! I know most people want to decorate straight away, but the best advice i can give is to live in the house the way it is for about 6 months. That why you get a better idea of how you use the house, how the light is in each room etc.
During that time you can be researching what you would like in your house, so you don't end up getting something you won't like later on.
If you like a homey traditional look the mag 25 beautiful homes is out on 2nd of every month, great mag.
    i hope this helps.

Thanks little me - we've actually been living in the house the last 2 years renting it, so I can't wait to get at it cos the landlord did bugger all with the house since it was built.

    Well then get stuck in!

You can't go wrong with a neutral palette throughout your house. Farrow and ball's colour "elephant breath" is what I used in my kitchen cupboards and it looks fab. If you choose a neutral (not just magnolia cream) colour scheme for your walls then your furniture/accessories will always look better. Ebay is great for antique finds to add more character to your house than just buying new stuff from big brand shops.

    Happy decorating!

Aswell as magazines...no harm to pick up a few paint brochures from the paint shops and DIY stores.

They will show various decorated/painted rooms in the house with all different colours.

    And they are FREE too.:)

Tesco Clarehall also have a good selection of ID magazines too.

Also take a trip to Ikea in Balymun and walk through the various room/kitchen mock ups to see various themes and styles that you can create.:)

Congratts on the new home too.:)

    Hi Soundgarden!
Congrats on the new build! Its great to get to the interiors part of it all!

I got a guy to spray paint my kitchen cupboards for me using the Farrow and Ball paint "Elephants Breath" interior eggshell. Gorgeous colour and i'm going to paint the walls in "Skimming Stone" to complement this tone, one wkd when I can get the kids out of the house! :)
I didn't buy a new kitchen as the previous owner had just fitted a solid oak kitchen, which was of great quality. But I just wanted to paint them and take away the wood look. I'm getting solid oak worktops fitted (40mm depth). Oak worktops will look great with any neutral colour of cabinetry.

If you are going to get your kitchen units made, then they can spray paint them in any colour you want.
If your budget doesn't stretch to that, then most "big brand" shops mainly do ivory or even sage green colour units.

Ikea do a really dramatic grey colour, see link attached. And the also do solid oak countertops.

I hope this helps. Happy kitchen hunting!

I had a big renovation job done on my house recently, (thank god that's over) but before I done my decorating I spent a few wks browsing interior designers websites looking at their galleries and got some great ideas. Made 4 visits to Ikea spending a couple of hours there and picking up different things each time.
Spent over an hour in DLK Wall Designs (twice) having heard about them here before picking out 2 amazing wallpapers we used, 1 for our dining room and 1 for a feature wall in our living room. Plus our kids picked out some wall stickers to decorate their rooms with, which look great..
And we got some fresh family photos taken to decorate our landing for constant reminders of the good things in life..
I still walk around the house looking at everything with a massive smile, so happy it's all done.
Best of luck with your project, it'll be so rewarding when it's all finished.
