Butane in carry-on?

    Hi,

My wife wants to bring a butane gas powered hair curler on a Ryanair flight soon. On the RYR website under prohibited items it says 'Gas & gas containers e.g. Butane, propane, acetylene, oxygen - in large volume'

The container of gas for the curler is about 50ml, so not large at all. Would this be a problem? Should we put it in with the liquids?

She really wants to bring the bloody thing so just saying don't bring it is only adding to my problems. :D

A compressed explosive gas? If they find that they'll cause you all sorts of problems. If she wants to bring it, buy gas wherever you're going

So, are gas cigarette lighters allowed?

One per passenger, in carry on only. And I'd imagine they're lower in both pressure and volume than a can of butane.

    But here:

The Delta Airlines, American Airlines, and FAA websites all agree that a single butane hair iron, with the gas cartridge installed, is allowed.
However, butane fuel canister refills (other than one inside the iron) are banned.

AA and FAA say the butane hair curling iron (with the gas cartridge installed) is allowed in both checked and carry on luggage.
Delta apparently allows a butane hair curling iron only in carry-on baggage.

    .....don't know about IAA tho

Jeez, this is getting more conflustericating.

The pressure is the same as a lighter, it's filled from the same can. The amount of gas is only slightly more than a normal lighter.

I dunno..... wait, what about if the container was empty and depressurised? Then it's just a plastic container. She can buy a gas refill can at the other end. Any thoughts?

There is nothing on the Dublin Airport website that says you can't bring such an item on board, either in carry-on or checked-in baggage.

See the section 'Prohibited Items' at the webpage below.....

True but it also says this is not a definitive list and they can still conficate stuff.

From reading other forums it seems some carriers allow a single cannister in the iron with no refills, and others don't allow any. So you have to call you're carrier. But it seems like a grey enough area that they'll just confiscate it and send you on your way.
