Satellite broadband query

I hope I’m posting this in the right forum. I need some advice from those in the know. At the moment, I am getting WiFi Broadband from Three as part of the NBS scheme. But I have noticed a significant deterioration in service in recent months. Online gaming is now virtually impossible and live streaming ect, is but a dream.

I’m thinking of switching over to satellite broadband but I’m getting conflicting reports about it. A friend who had it, said he had absolutely no problems with online gaming. But am I right in thinking, that the high ping rate with Satellite broadband would be a problem for gaming ect? Some enlightenment on this issue would be appreciated.

If your thinking of gaming, then yes, satelite broadband has very high ping rates which are no good for games.

You should expect about 800ms delay with satellite, so almost all types of online gaming would be unplayable. (you'd be able to play chess online but that's about as fast paced as you could manage). Streaming would technically be possible because the bandwidth can be pretty okay, but satellite also has a very low cap so any regular streaming would put you over your cap.

The words satellite and broadband don't belong in the same sentence

With such a high ping forget about using voip (skype etc) on it. Satellite should only be used as a last resort.

Thanks for all the advice, looks like I'll be kicking the satellite broadband into touch.
