What is your budget per night for accommodation? Rome is quite an expensive city to stay in. I would recommend for a first time visitor that you stay in the central historical district around the Pantheon/Piazza Navona, this would leave you within walking distance of most attractions. If you plug your dates into a website like booking.com, you can narrow your search area. We stayed in a lovely little hotel just a couple of minutes walk from the Pantheon, it was called Albergo Cesari and we paid about €130 per night last August. It was a lovely, clean 3 star, not madly fancy, but the room was a good size and it came with a fab buffet breakfast served on the beautiful roof terrace.

As for things to do, sheesh, you could spend 4 weeks there and barely scrape the surface! What do you like to do? Historical sites, churches, art galleries, great shopping, fab restaurants, Rome has it all. I suppose the 'must sees' would include

    Colliseum
    Forum
    St. Peter's basilica
    Vatican museum
    Pantheon
    Trevi fountain
    Spanish steps
    Piazza Navona
    Campo di Fiore market

But they are just the big ticket items, Rome is one of those amazing places where there is a beautiful site around every corner. For example, there is a church with the most beautiful Carravaggio paintings that is free and never crowded, all you have to do is put a few cents in a box to see them illuminated. It seems like around every corner there is a wonderful church or fountain or piazza. And even if you're not into art or history, there is no better city for just sitting out with a glass of vino and watching the world go by.

So yes, there is lots to see and do! It truly is one of the great cities of the world.

Just back from Rome a couple of weeks ago. Dont worry, you wont be short of things to see. The rule I normally use is to stay as close to the pantheon as you can. Thats pretty central to the stuff you will want to see. Nice cafes and squares around too.
