Motor Tax - Changed vehicle

Hi all. Recently changed my car and am wondering if I can tax it online?

It seems like you can only renew tax on a current vehicle or tax a brand new car on the website. For a newly acquired used car, I presume you have you go to the tax office?

Do you have the logbook yet?
If so you should have enough info to do a "PIN retrieval" on www.motortax.ie
If you have lost or misplaced your PIN, have yet to receive it, or have recently purchased a vehicle and wish to retrieve your PIN, please enter the details requested below and we will email the PIN to you if your vehicle is eligible for online taxing.

Yes exactly. You need to go in yourself, any further renewals thereafter can then be done online

    Pin retrieval wont work ^

If it's a second hand car, then yes, you use the pin retrieval function as biko said! You just have to wait for them to process the change of address so the details you enter match the log book (Did it myself the other month).

PIN retrieval doesn't work. ... The hint is in the name. How can you retrieve a PIN which has never actually been issued in the first place.

My gf recently bought a car, the cars tax expired a few weeks later, at which stage she had her log book. Pin retrieval didn't work, i went to tax office for her and enquired about it.

I was clearly told, first time you tax a new (to you) car you have to go to the tax office, only afterwards will they start issuing online PINs

As I said, I did it! Car in Dec, waited for log book, got pin retrieved via email, and paid for tax in Jan. No issues, no going into a tax office.

https://www.motortax.ie - click on the pin retrieval link and read - "If you have lost or misplaced your PIN, have yet to receive it, or have recently purchased a vehicle and wish to retrieve your PIN, please enter the details requested below and we will email the PIN to you if your vehicle is eligible for online taxing."

edit: but if it didn't work for your gf then it didn't and fair enough. But seems to be the exception to the rule.

A renewal form will come with the vlc if the car ain't taxed on the date of sale.

No you do not have to go in to the tax office, I've a pin for my recent 'new' car.

It came with the renewal form that was in the envelope with the vlc, and then another came with the final notice.

Nope, I don't even know where the motor tax office is, for that matter.

Back in September, I simply waited a bit after getting the car and managed to do everything online - all I needed to do the procedure was the car's registration and my address details, and got the PIN as an email.

Recently taxed an imported car online for the first time. My PIN was the last 6 digits of the chasis number. Don't know if this is just a system for imports only or what.......

You're right mate, PIN retrieval didn't work. Had to go into the tax office and the bloke confirmed as much.

A bloody pain in the arse!

If you buy a second hand car, once the car is registered in your name the pin retrieval works. I have done it many many times.

Do you have the logbook? I'm not sure why it didn't work for you but I've done it for all seven cars that I have bought.

My GF had the same issue last month, and yes she had her logbook.

I was told you cant do it online first time by the woman at the tax and so was Jesus, so its confirmed.

I dont doubt that it could have be done before but maybe due to changes in their system it cant be done any more.

When was the last time you did it?

Was your tax already expired when you bought the car?

Maybe its a case of if you buy the car with tax already expired it works but if it expires just after you buy it, it doesnt? .. there has to be a common denominator here.

Must be just confirmed for your missis, Jaysus and yer wan in the tax office :pac:

Unless there's just differences between the local authorities I dont know.., but i will confirm one doesn't have to go to the T.O, in Kildare, i've burnt more of them renewal forms than I care to remember, and they always come with the pin.

The last time i stepped into the tax office was taxing my commercial for the first time.
