My friend leaving a station in Cavan yesterday at 11am and was stopped waiting to pull off when one guy in a Dublin reg avensis pulls up along side him and rolled down the window.. said he was the Gardai and wanted to know his name, where is was from and then asked what he was doing up here etc.( he only lives 5 miles across the border in Northern Ireland…
Its was an unmarked car and guy was in plain clothes and was not at all nice to him.its as if he shouldnt be up here at all.
He now knows he could have asked for his id before answering any questions but didn’t want to come across a smart ass.
My friend was just getting petrol and could have been sarky to him but he is not the kind of person .
What was his game, did he have to answer these questions and at such a awkward place.. what was the right thing to do in this case... no offence was committed thats for sure

Advice: Tell your friend to keep doing what he's doing.

Definitely get ID first. For all you know that guy was looking for a name to match the reg on the car for some car scam or something. You never know. If no crime has been committed who cares if the cop gets pissed off by being asked.

Thread cleaned up. Sorry, OP, there were a few replies that were completely off-topic so I had to delete them. You didn't miss anything worthwhile.

    The guards do this.

Similar thing happened to me and my friend a couple of months ago, pulled over coming out of a petrol station and asked same question by an unmarked guarda car - only difference he told us his name and station he was from.

he was also very rude and straight forward, no need for it but that's just how some people are.

Could be a simple case that they where looking for someone for whatever reason and that someone drives the same car as your friend, so they decided to question him to see if he was the person they where looking for.

Nothing he can really do about it now. Just let it pass.
