Trading up from 08 Mazda5 to 2010 Grand Scenic

Opinions welcome please. Our trusty Mazda5 is just too small for our family of 6, the main issue being the lack of a proper middle seat in the centre row. It's also not very frugal (39mpg on average). It has 110k km. We can get a 2010 Grand Scenic with 40k km for €8700 with our own which seems a bit steep to me. The scenic however does about 60mpg and will have a 2 year warranty as well as road tax over €300 pa less. I should save €1900 per year all told on lower running costs etc. I'ld prefer a Galaxy or Alhambra but cost to change is much higher.

We have a scenic. No way will it do 60mpg. More like 40mpg around town and better on open road but not 60

Averaging 48mpg in our Scenic 1.5dci.

    No it doesn't.

The lad I work with has a 10 reg scenic 1.5dci. He said on short town runs it barely does 40mpg, that's goes up to high 40s on the road but with a full load (wife and 3 children, prams, car seats etc) it'll do 45 at the very best on a long run.

Just goes to show you can't believe the sales literature...

Still about 20% better fuel consumption than mine. Savings will only be about 800pa. What about the Scenic in terms of comfort practicality etc.

Ultra practical and set up for comfort. Hard to beat if you need bigger family transport but don't want to go Galaxy big.

The plot thickens. On further shopping I have narrowed down the options.

My car with €9900 for a 2011 grand scenic with 6700miles and 11 month warranty
    Or
My car with €9200 for a 2011 with 46000 miles and a 2yr 11 month warranty. Car is higher spec too. Both scenics are uk imports.

If both are UK cars then they should both have the balance of the UK 3 year warranty. How does one have an additional 2 years?

If option 2 is a Privilege spec then I would go for that with the longer warranty.

    Hi Stalingrad,
Yes option 2 is a privilege spec and has a longer warranty because it is being sold by the main dealer here in Cork who are giving me their own extra 2 year warranty as a sweetener. Seems good to me and is certainly the option I'm leaning towards.

What do you think of the price to change? I really think I have dragged them as low as they can go.

    Maddragon,

Can I jump in and ask you what your experience of the Mazda was?

I have 3rd kid on way and its near the top of my list for potential cars. I have yet to see one in the flesh yet, but would like your opinions as an owner on it.

You'd bring a 2010 Grand Scenic Privilege for €15000 cleared. So you are being offered around 4-5k for your car. But he's giving you a good warranty. I would push him a bit harder though, I suspect there is a bit more to be had.

    This car is 2011 though

Hi Niman, Mine is on donedeal just now http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/5085249
We want to try and get a better cash offer on the Renault. We love the mazda but it is too small for us with 4 kids and assorted paraphenalia. We bought it when we had 2 kids and had 2 years of motoring bliss. The car does about 39mpg overall - maybe 42mpg on long journeys. They seem to be heavy on the rear shocks as we have replaced one and the other side is gone now too. My mechanic who has a mazda5 himself says it is common. Problem solved by putting in heavier duty monroe shocks. To be honest I can't think of a better car for a 2+2child family who want the option of bringing friends around after school etc.

Oh yeah - the sliding doors are brilliant and I said I'ld never be without them again but I can't afford an Alhambra.

PSS: Congrats on new arrival. If you are not considering a 4th child then this is a great car for you. Plenty of boot room with one of the rear seats folded down. We always hid away the centre seat in the middle row too unless it was needed.

    Thanks for the feedback.

No3 will be the last (better be!) and I think it might be wise to go for a 7 seater, rather than a 5 seat MPV like the Scenic or C-Max, simply for the extra free space.

At the minute I can't decide between a VW Touran, Corolla Verso, Mazda 5, Honda FR-V.

A Grand Scenic is too small for our family of 5+dog. Are you sure it'll be big enough for a couple of years?

    (We got an S-max).

I've seen both and can't see any difference to be honest except a slightly bigger boot in the S-Max. We have a roof box for long trips anyway. Also the wife hates the inside of the S-max even though it is a beauty to look at. Cost would also be an issue for me.

S-Max is 30cm longer, 10 cm wider and weighs 250 kg more.

... plus one is made by Ford and the other by Renault.

    I know which I'd choose.

Me too. Had 1 x new Galaxy and 3 x Scenics. Currently selling my Saab 9-5 Estate and going back to a.............. Scenic.

And looks like a hearse inside IMO . No doubting its a better resale value and all but I think the scenic is more comfortable. It may be shorter but not inside the cabin

I have no problems with the Scenic, I've owned lots of French cars over the years.

But seriously: bring a tape measure. The Scenic is a size below the S-Max, and I really believe it'll be too tight for 6 of you. If there were six of us (plus dog) I'd have bought a Galaxy.

Thanks for the advice, I know well that overall an S-Max is a better car but we all took the Scenic for a spin and it was way more comfortable than the Mazda for the centre row passengers. I suppose you are right about being too small if the kids were older but they are 10,9,2 and 10 months. The Grand scenic will work fine for us for a few years I think. It's 21cm shorter than the S-Max and you can see most of this in the boot space with all 7 seats up. However the scenic boot is still big enough for our icandy double buggy with 2 seats. We love that you can easily remove one of the centre seats in the scenic for storage and any extras for long journeys would have to go in a roof box regardless of what car we were driving - even an Alhambra or Galaxy. I couldn't justify (or afford) the extra €5k or so we would have to spend to get an equivalent S-Max which would also have a lesser spec than the Scenic. If money was no object I'ld get a 2013 Alhambra with the built in booster seats and the sliding doors.

In any event it's too late - the wife and kids fell in love with the Grand Scenic Privilege model and the 2 year old cried when we put her back in the Mazda. We're collecting her for next weekend before we head up to Galway.
