My mother has moderate Alzheimers and has started living with us in Dublin for the last two months whilst she is settling in ok going to more day centres here, has company with us and her dog. Every 2nd/3rd day she is always saying that she may go home tomorrow or at end of week and gets moody when I tell her she is living with us now and explain why she has to stay (she was forgotting/hiding medication etc, burning pots or leaving heating applicances on) I explained this and that the social worker, nurses and doctor adviced me she was safer with us it also gave me piece of mind to have her with me. She get cross that she wasnt informed of this as I had a meeting with them on Friday and we brought her home to ours on the Monday so it was a quick goodbye to her home. I have tried to go home a few times and collect items and will not be selling it so she can see it when she wants. Her main issue is that she is fiercly independant all her life and doesnt want that taken away from her (I try and give her as much as I can whilst not compromising her safety) also she is aware we are a young married couple in our 30's and I think she feels she is a burden and in the way even though we have never ever said this to her we always bring her on trips, chat, watch tv together and go out to restaurants but we give her her space too so we are not overbearing. When she is constantly talking about going home and gets moody should I explain again and again the situation or just go along with it and hope she forgets.

Sorry to hear that news about your Mam. I'm sure you've read up a lot about it so I'll just say in summary, it is going to be a very difficult time for everybody. You don't say how big your family is, we were lucky in that there were ten children to take turns to look after our Mam. Even then is wasn't easy. Most important is always to include time for yourself, caring for somebody with Alzheimer's will see you go through every emotion there is. All I can say is to wish you the best of luck.
