what make of stove is it? We recently got a stanley cara insert fitted and before refuelling you have to open the air intake completely at the bottom for a few seconds before opening the door. You can hear and see the smoke pull up the chimney when you do this. If you are already doing something simillar with your stove before opening the door, then you may have a problem with your chimney not producing enough of a draw. Have you had it cleaned recently? If you are in an area or location that suffers from downdrafts there are attachments you can put on the top of the chimney which are supposed to help but i cant vouch for how/if they are effective.

It's a esse insert stove.ya I cleaned the chimney at the start of December .there is a air vent at the bottom so I will try what you said about opening it.

You definitely need to open the bottom air vent before refueling let it open for about 20 to 30 seconds before opening the door. You will probably find the chimney draws better after the stove is up and running a while and a fire is well established

Is it hard to get out. My one Seems.to slide about ten mill up and back. The smoke and fumes would smother u in a minute if left open.

dont forget to give the stove a good strip down and clean out each year and check at all door and glass seals are in good condition . also check the fire grate seal too , as this will degrade over time and let air in from the bottom and over fire the stove . i cleaned out my stove yesterday and checked that all seals were in good nick . did the paper test on the glass door too .

    Hi guys,

I got my plumber to install a stanley cara plus stove wit boiler recently. It heats radiators great and there is plenty of hot water but it smokes terribly when o try refuelling even when I open the dampers as reccommended. There is a huge build up of tar inside the stove and it can be seen on the top of the chimney pot. I took out the top plate and cleaned it too. Am at my wits end!!! Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Could be that there is not enough of a draw in the room. You could possibly need a vent installed
