Considering all the threads on Road Tax...

...why don't the Government just consider a new tax, and call it 'Road Tax', considering such a tax does not already exist.

It could replace the current 'Motor Tax', and would be liable to any one either driving or riding a motor or self propelled mode of transport, including bikes.

Motorists who already own a bike, would not be liable any additional charge, but would be required to register their bike.

Anyone already owning a bike who does not drive would be required as well to register their bike, and pay a once off 10% of the of the purchase price to revenue on production of the receipt, this cost would increase to 11% if they do not have a receipt, the additional 1% as an admin charge to find the RRP of the bike at manufacturing.

As an incentive, any new bikes will only be charged once off at 9%, and will also have to be registered.

Bikes bought second hand or changing will also be liable the 10/11% charge as above, the 10% charge based on production of the original receipt. This also serves as an incentive to buy new.

People with multiple bikes will be charged at 4%(new)/5%(exsisting,second hand, change of ownership on production of receipt)/6%(exsisting,second hand, change of ownership with no receipt)......

Hopefully by now, you will see this as a p!ss take, (i) based on the government incentive to buy new cars several budgets ago, and (ii) also with all the people calling it road tax, or calling for bikes to be charged. Although better not let the minister for finance see this, might give him ideas.

    :)
