    Hi,

Looking for some input on reccommendations for a car between 8K-10K.
What I'm looking at so far:
    • 1.4 - 1.6 (should I look at bigger engine? - see my next post down in this thread)
    • Petrol (I'll be doing <10,000 per year, mostly city driving with cross-country trips just every 2 months or so)
    • Black, Silver Navy preferred
    • Less than 100,000KM on the clock
    • 2008 upwards
    • Something with a bit of poke in it
    • Looks 'sporty' (see below cars I like look of)

    I like the look of:
    1.4 Astra GTC 3 Dr
    1.6 Fiesta Zetec-S 120ps

I've seen the i30's mentioned before but not mad about the look of them.

Mechanically, I know the golfs are meant to be a great car and I'd need to go older years to be able to afford one with my budget, but I just find them a bit boring style-wise.

Any help/suggestions appreciated. Ideally, I'd like to stick to around 9K but will stretch to 10K if it's a really great car.

Am I limiting myself too much and should I look at older cars that I could get for around 6K and use the remaining money to cover the extra running costs on their tax, insurance, parts etc? (like going for some 1.8-2.0ltr instead etc)

    Thanks :)

    Why 1.4 to 1.6 requirement?
With 08 onward cars, engine size doesn't affect motor tax.

Because in terms of insurance, petrol, servicing etc I figured I could get something that wasn't huge to run on a yearly basis. Seeing as I'm not doing big mileage, if you (or anyone) thinks that it doesn't matter much and I should look at bigger engines..then by all means please do recommend away :)

My idea would be Civic 1.8
Great engine with plenty of power, which will probably use less fuel than many 1.6 or even 1.4 petrol engines. Very reliable.

Servicing cost is similar in most petrol engines. Most expensive parts are usually timing belt changes and clutch when it dies. In Civic 1.8 timing belt is not a problem because it's a chain driven engine.

Insurance though might be slightly more expensive just because it's a honda civic. I can't understand that logic - but that's it.

Example, 31 year old, full no claims €470 full comp with full bonus protection.
    07 1.8

Very good on fuel for a petrol.

Next one will be a newer 2.2 diesel though. A long time since I've ever wanted the same model twice

Yeah I just had a look on non-nonsense there and the below Civic worked out at only an extra €50 per year over the other cars fully comp and €20 extra 3rd party.
Motor tax is €673 vs €280 on the fiesta I mentioned though - I wouldn't mind if you reckon the servicing is not a huge different cost.

I like the look of this SType http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/Civic/1.8-TYPE/201307212408718/advert?channel=CARS prefer Black it in, not mad about the Silver

So it looks like difference is negligible.

    That must be a mistake.
673 is tax for 1.9 engine based on engine size.
If you buy 08 or newer 1.8 civic, you will pay based on CO2 emissions, so with 153g/km on 1.8 civic hatchback you will pay 390 euro per annum.

Type S is 3 door. If you don't mind I believe it's fantastic car.

Yeah 3dr doesn't bother me. I was just checking out HonestJohn site and the review looks great on the 1.8 Civic - From what I saw the 'regular' version is 140BHP..does that sound right?
I'm planning on test-driving a few cars on Sat so will defo try out the Civic now!

08 civic hatch on emissions is €570 by the way.

All the 1.8 models are 140hp

Black is a hoor to keep clean and scratches really easily on that model.

Glass roof and cruise is an essential on those IMO

Hmmm most sources seem to show 1.8 ES having 152g/km.
That would be at 390 per year.

Looks like TypeS version is 156, therefore one step higher on tax rate.

    Bit of poke? Sporty?

ha didn't see that, still a good car though.

Yep, the ES and SE is cheaper to tax, but the Type S as the OP wanted is higher.
Saloon is at the higher rate too.

Think i'll try them both out as it looks like the standard 1.8 is still nippy. I know what you mean about the Black though (I had a Black Landcrusier for a while once)...I'll see how I feel about other colors when I see some of them in the flesh

Performance is the same but some technicality like bigger wheels or a few extra kg probably pushed the type S over the edge into the next tax band.

Best colour on them is the bronze IMO.
