worn gear teeth, not slipped into the gear correctly, an offset.

    whats the remedy?

    Whats the car?

Knowing that might allow us to suggest whether a gearbox from a breakers might be an option rather than a rebuild.

if your a homeless student you wont have the money to fix it.
flat out in fourth is a cost effective fix.

What milage? Is the car slipping in gear? Are you pressing the clutch in fully before putting the car into 5th?

That year focus wouldn't be particularly known in my experience for gearbox problems so possibly best to try and get on from a breakers though you're never sure what you're getting.

96,000 miles, ya pressing the clutch fully.

Sound like a syncro issue but I'd take it to a gear shop to let them have a listen before doing anything else. You never know, it can be something small they can fix right there and then on the cheap.
