In a difficult situation here. Suckler cows and calves still in shed.
Calves are let out to grass during day and let back in evening time.
Calves eating approx. 1.5-2.0 kg creep per day as well.
Land heavy here and wet as we had floods on saturday,
    Calves are Jan/Feb/March born.
How do you think the calves would do if i weaned them off cows completely as i could them put the dry cows to a hill for the summer

I did it this year with cows I wanted to cull, wasn't a bother on the calves

I think the calves would be fine if they were treated for worms and vaccinated against pneumonia before weaning. Would you not be worried about the cows getting mastitis during the summer?

Calves will go on grand keep the creep in.

Put tar on the cows once the flys start.

    Thanks simx and tanko
Cows mainly CHx not in great condition with being inside so long and not great milkers at the best of times I think they would be ok

Would you consider selling the calves straight off the cows?
You would be surprised how much they would make in the mart!
They will need plenty of creep between now and year end.
Might well pay to leave that to somebody else!
I'm thinking of trying a couple like yours in the mart next month. They will be four months.

I did a bit of that too with any under 42 days, ranged from 200>485 any over the 6 weeks were let on to be reared to kind of runners
