Battery light on, no charge (old system)

Ive looking at a tractor here with alternator and external voltage regulator.
It has stopped charging and is showing the battery light on the dash when running.
Its a 3 wire alternator (1 large battery wire, and 2 light guage wires)
    The regulator has 4 connections.

If I put battery power direct to one of the small connections on the alternator, it charges fine. When I check the actual feed to this same connection it has 12v but immediately drops to 2 or 3v when connected to alternator. Battery power direct to this point and connected to alternator will not drop down at all.

I therefore figuring that the wiring of the tractor possible the regulator is not giving the proper voltage to 'excite' the alternator.

    Any advice.

Check the wiring of alternator and battery also may be there is current leakage,

Sounds like the wire to the terminal that you are checking has a bad connection and is breaking down when the load is applied.Check along the length of the wire and where its connected to.A new length of wire might cure it.

Have a new regulator on the way so will try that but yes if that doesnt work, I will have to trace back that wire.
