    Hi all.

The fan on my laptop (HP G61-110SA) is making an awful racket. Like a bearing is worn or the like. Keeping in mind that I am clueless about this sort of thing and my laptop is about 3 years old; should I:

    1. Get it repaired
    2. Have a go at replacing it myself (with some boards.ie help biggrin.png)
    3. Upgrade to a new laptop

Could you hazard a guess at the cost involved in option 1 and 2 please?

    Thanks in advance!!

I think your g61 is the same as the above guide have a read and see if you can do it.

have a look at this and see what you think.

    http://www.laptopinventory.com/LaptopInventory.php/HP/G%20Series/G61-110SA/Fan

if you think for're up for it, then a new fan will cost you less than 30 quid delivered and you should be able to do it comfortably within an hour.

you can probably add €100 to that figure to get someone to do it professionally for you.

Thanks folks. That doesn't seem to bad at all. I think what I'll do is back up all my files on an external hard drive and give it a shot. I've nothing to lose!

3 people in my family have that laptop (they were very cheap a few years back) and all of them have been getting worse and worse with the fan noise. a way to help with the noise is keep the laptop on a hard surface and if possible keep the back (under the screen hinge) of it raised because the heat vents from the bottom and has nowhere to escape to, also take a hoover to the vents underneath it to try get some dust out of it might help
and getting something like this would probably help

when you start up the laptop for the first few mins is the laptop quite then does it start making noise? if so its probably just getting to hot and the fan then starts running faster to try keep the cpu cool.
if its making noise as soon as you start it up constantly its probably the fan

I changed a fan on a G60 a few months back, not sure how similar the G61 might be.

Here's my experience of the G60 anyway
The g60 requires complete disassembly to change the fan. Its fiddly but not too bad. You might want to consider fitting a copper shim between the graphics chip and the heatsink, instead of the pad fitted. Remove fluff, new thermal paste, maybe drill a few extra/bigger holes in base while you have the mobo out. Tape a couple of pencils to the base to raise it off the table a bit.

also take a hoover to the vents underneath it to try get some dust out of it might help

Never take a vacuum cleaner to a laptop or desktop, it's like a static electricity generator that can fry the components and you risk doing damage to the fan.

The HP G61 tends to gather dust and overheat fairly quickly because of it's vents and cooling system.

First port of call should be to clean out any build up of dust caught and fresh batch of thermal paste which will require that model to be stripped down completely. 3 years is a fair amount of time for a laptop to gather dirt on the inside.
