I am looking to get a car and have 2k budget.
Must be a diesel(not too big an engine), decent miles and have cl/aircon etc.
What would you go for and what would you avoid like the plague:D

    Any suggestions?

You wont get anything diesel with low milage and a small engine for that money

try looking at Peugeots 307 hdi or fiesta 1.4 but anything you can get for 2 grand is bound to be a ball of scrap

Youre asking a bit much to be honest aircon, decent miles, diesel with a small engine with only 2 grand to spend

I know I suggest them alot but with a 2k budget relatively small budget for a good diesel car a skoda octavia would be a good bet. 1.9tdi engine very reliable and very economical. My uncles have had a few they bought for under 2k euro and they all served them well. My parents have two 05/11 ones and neither ever cause trouble.

Otherwise an Opel astra 1.7 diesel would be a good car very reliable engine. They would be the two I would be looking at anyway.

I reckon you'd be hard pressed to find anything with that low mileage and diesel for 2k. Most diesels in that price bracket are shagged. They are in high demand and command high prices, even for rubbish.

At that kind of price and looking for that mileage I'd be very wary of buying a clocked car, be careful.
You'll be hard pressed to tick all those boxes.

406 HDI will give plenty of mpg, comfort and should be reliable enough for €2k...

Think this car has everything required :)

    Low milage too.

Or if this one does have a comprehensive service history as promised it could be sweet.

last year i bought 2 different diesels for sub 2k each. i think the trick is to buy a car with a more old school, dated diesel engine as they are generally much more robust.

for your situation i would buy a Focus with a 1.8 TDDi engine (not the tdci). i bought a 99 model with a/c, all electrics and central locking (as you require) for €1500, with a brand new NCT. it had 170k miles on it and i put another 10k ish onto it in around 4 months and all i did was change the oil in it once. the car was a little rusty in hidden places but a good go-er, so dont be afraid of big mileage.

the other i bought was a 2003 vectra 2.0 DTi (not CDTi). bought that for 1950, with no NCT, "only" 120k verified miles on it. Put it through the test and all it needed were a few bushings in the rear and the headlights focused (repairs and NCT fee all came to sub €100). Again, put around 10k miles on it very quickly with no more than another oil change needed. the vectra was a fabulous car for the money imo, all electrics inside, a/c, central locking, trip comp, cruise control, auto dimming rear view, auto lights.

both cars had patchy service historys.

you need to be careful in that price bracket, but its far from impossible to get a good car :)

to be honest i wouldn't go near a 307 with a barge pole. all well and good saving €300 on a years tax with a 1.4 vs 2.0, but that'l be wiped out in an instant when one of their many faults crops up.

This man knows cheap diesels :D

There's a 1999 1.9TD ( better than a HDi) in great condition in Navan for 1400, a red one. Can't go wrong with one, unless it's been seriously abused

Hard to beat on value for money :)
