change your title to include UPC, can you do a reset on the router? I have never heard of that before. and you may have to ring UPC

    Weird.

I know UPC route all their traffic through the Netherlands but not Austria.

Are you running off a VPN?

No VPN, Just whois'd my IP and its now telling me its in Ireland but webpages still telling me i'm in Austria.

Tried deleting all cache and cookies and all that in the browser.

But nout, same on the smart tv, won't let me in.

Just off the phone with UPC and they have no clue.

    Weird

Great tech sport from UPC there.
Can you log into the router and do a release/ renew on the WAN IP?

It's possible UPC are using a newly assigned public IP range in Ireland that was previously in use in Austria and the IP-to-location info is still showing the previous country. This is not uncommon and can happen from time to time. Paperwork may be going through to fix this but it can take some time.

Can you post you current public IP address to the Internet? (or PM it)

    Thanks

Most sites will use a third party provided database for their geo lookups. They don't do any kind of realtime testing. It'll take time for whatever their sources are to be corrected.

I have the same thing and Im on UPC too! First noticed it a few weeks ago websites recognised me as being in Austria! Didnt take much notice but just bought something online and ended up paying for shipping to Austria

I've also noticed the same only because Teamspeak noticed I'm coming from Austria

Im getting the same problem too, Im unable to put anything for sale on gumtree.ie as its seeing my location as austria! I called UPC BB support and they had no idea but were adamant it's a problem with the settings on my laptop and tried to fob me onto a premium rate number to fix it.

Incedently this has only happened since I got a new cisco 3925 modem. Is there any workaround?

You'll need to wait until the relevant databases are updated, and there's no guarantee as to when that will happen, if ever.

Can you go to www.ip2location.com and post the results.
I'm using a Cisco from UPC also and the results are from Ireland.

Same issue for myself, everything keeps coming up as I'm in Austria!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,395 ✭✭✭5500

I had the modem swopped out for a technicolour one by UPC and I was back in Ireland. Have since gotten horizon and I'm still showing up here too so it must be an issue with the Cisco's in some way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

Its not a modem issue, its just the IPs dont change that often on UPC. But when the MAC address changes you get a new IP, so changing devices changes your IP.

This happened during the summer when UPC moved their residential customers on to the 80.111 subnet. Previously they were using 79.97 and 89.101. I remember at one point that MSN.com and Lyngsat were detecting me as being in Austria but this doesn't seem to be the case now.

Bumping an old thread, but this is still going on. I flashed DD-WRT to my TP-Link router attached to my bridged EPC3925 a couple of days ago, and since then various sites think I'm in Austria (Speedtest.net, SkyScanner etc.) and on other sites I get ads in German. I have one of the 80.111.xxx.xxx addresses alluded to above. I'd have thought 5 months would have been enough for the various geolocation services to have got their act together.

Spoof a new MAC address on your TP Link. Boom, new IP. Should only take one try to get an Irish IP.

Thanks, I'd already figured that out last night, and managed to get a new one all right, but forgot to come back and report.

It's still a PITA though, even more so because some locations services are returning the right result and others aren't. It's not UPC's fault (this time!)

Happening to me all the time at the moment. Real pain.

Can you explain how I "spoof a new IP address"?

I see this on a UPC business connection.

I actually wondered if it might have been something to do with using OpenDNS.

Will try the MAC switcheroo if I can get the chance to spend a bit of time on it.

It's not a Polish IP (anymore). RIPE is the official internet registry for Europe, and it's search correctly reports it as an Irish IP.

Anything that reports you as having a Polish IP is using an out-of-date database.

That's exactly it, websites use 3rd party services that are slow as hell to update, not UPCs problem.

    How do I do that?

    I'm having the same problem.

Additional to this my Outlook email is down.
Also I can't access it online as my email provider thinks I'm in Poland and gives me limited access.

UPC gave me some spoof to use Explorer instead of Firefox but that doesn't help my "Polish" problem.

Google puts me in Poland. I'd imagine they would be up to date.

UPC have acknowledged its their problem to me. Problem is they are slow to fix it.

If you put your IP into the official European internet registry, where does it report your location? If they show it as Ireland, everywhere showing it as Poland is using an out-of-date database (yes, even Google)

What people need to understand is there are no longer hundreds of thousands of unused ips floating about. As they become scarce they are moved to meet demand. These moves cause the above. The internet as a whole is bad about reacting to these changes, currently, but I expect things to improve.

To mac spoof you need to bridged and then enter the advanced configuration of WAN on your router and edit it. Changing just one character at the end is enough.

    That link doesn't work unfortunately.
