Hi, I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar encounter with open racism in front of everyone.

On the bus coming home yesterday evening, I was waiting to get off and I was queuing behind a couple that spoke with Southern African accents, one of them chats to the driver about there travel around Europe.

Then drops this bombshell "Yeah I like Ireland, not too many black people eh?"
I was really shocked that he said it, so to was the driver who spoke how great black people like Phil Lynott were in reply to him. Then the backpacker said "well I don't like em".

It happened so quickly in a bus full of people, he wasn't joking, he was serious.

I'm not saying every white South African is racist, but the few I have met were.

I'd have asked them have they met every black person in the world, and if not, how can they judge all black people as one.

Racist South Africans, well I never. Used to work with a good few, they were all racist just some hid it better than most. Ireland is also full of Irish racists, some hide it better than others.

If your opinion is to criticise/judge an entire race or ethnicity on the basis of the few that you've met, then you're a racist surely?

You can't just throw "IMO" on the end of something to make it ok.

One of the nicest people I know is a white girl who was born and raised in South Africa, her parents are both Irish though.

Even she says the most racist people she knows are Afrikaners.

While I don't condone racism, its very easy for us here in ireland to criticise such a mentality without having an appreciation for how things are at the moment over in South Africa, and indeed the likes of Zimbabwe. Relative to South Africa, we have zero experience of racism or racial divides in this country, so we can't relate

Again, I'm not condoning the mentality, however people need to understand that South Africa is a dangerous place, and its very easy to see how these attitudes are nurtured among the middle class, in otherwise decent, rational people

Ah Jesus, the bus driver shouldn't even have entertained them tbh. They were hardly going to change life-long held views on the whim of a 30 second exchange of words with a Dublin bus driver!

Sure I was at a party last week the only white guy among a crowd of about 100 black people (my friend is black and it was her son's communion, but tbf what I consider a "small get together of family and friends" and what she considers a small get together of family and friends, are vastly different concepts! :D), but a couple of the lads were gathered around the barbecue and the chap was turning the lamb chunks with his fingers, then dipping his fingers in water to cool them.

I goes to him "Jesus man have you no tongs?"

I nearly pissed myself laughing when he replied "Tongs are for white people!"

    Racist bastard! :pac:

I heard something similar when I was on the bus a a few weeks ago, a black guy talking about how much he hated arabs and how theyre pure evil or something lol

Has it occurred to people that their opinion is shaped on experience? You dont stop at a red light in S.A unless nesacary and bars on house windows is common due to the prolific crime levels and unfortunately these crimes have a disproportionate representation from the black community. Remember these people have been conditioned from a young age to be wary of black people so I dont think it is a standard hate racism, more a result of experience. If the same people grew up in an afulant area in America surround by a large black community comprising of doctors, bankers etc they could have a different outlook, afterall there has to be a reason so many white s Africans dislike blacks?

its the same as most irish people not liking gypsies, it does not make them bad people for holding an opinion shaped by experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,513 ✭✭✭bb1234567

I know one white south african man and hes the best guy youll ever meet. I also know a white zimbabwean whose one of the nicest guys ive ever met, idk if he counts tho. He has the same accent as the south african people anyways:pac: SO theyre not all bad atleast!

OK, you could probably argue that saying you don't like people from Soweto, for example, isn't racist, but I can't see how straight out saying you don't like a particular race can be anything else other than racist.

Gotta love this place. There's nothing wrong with generalizing and making digs at Afrikaner's.

But yet if you were to say anything remotely similar about Nigerians, etc the same crowd are up in arms and screaming racist, bigot, etc

Wonder if we'll see any Mod action on these comments.

Well, white South Africans have far more first-hand experience with actual Africans than most Irish people ever will have. For every Nelson Mandela, there's at least one Winnie Mandela). Which doesn't justify racism, but racism doesn't just pop up out of nowhere for no reason.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

    I never said otherwise.

My point was simply that people need to understand the root causes of such attitudes, rather then simply just regurgitating the "racism is evil" mantra, and assuming everyone with an attitude as described by the op in some sort of devil worshipping nazi.

The only was to change these sort of attitudes is to first address the socioeconomic issues in South Africa. Otherwise, you're just painting over rust

No it doesn't, you're right. It pops up out of the absurd belief that your race is superior to another. The reason is irrelevant because believing that 'black south africans are all criminals' is as ignorant a statement as 'all Irish people are alcoholics', or 'all dogs I see want to bite me', it's ridiculous.
